I was wondering. If anyone can please help me finding a good reputable Red Tail Boa care sheet. I can't find one. Or if its easier to post the temps and humidity that would be great. We got the little fellow yesterday, and All We have for him is what he came with. SO we need to get him a thermostat and a digital thermometer, and much more lol. Oh fun fun.

Wow thanks guys. This is great Help. The poor guy. He is so malnourished that I'm wondering about him. But now that we're fostering him tell he finds a good home I'll make sure he's healthy and back up to his weight once and if he finds a new home.

you guys found a redtail or some one gave it up to you?

No, What happened was the poor guy was found in an abandoned apartment and his tank was a mess no food or fresh water so they brought him to the vet. Then that same day my B/F's mother(shes a Vet tech at our local vet) called us asking if we would like to foster him. They told us he was a python, Later on I discovered he wasn't he was actually a Red Tailed Boa. So we took him in and He is soo thin. They feed him last night an adult mouse and there was no lump from the mouse, so me and my B/f are thinking of waiting about 5-6 days before we feed him again. Does this sound reasonable?

if theres no lump he need a bigger pray size try a rat. and about how long is he. and waiting about a week and a half to get him kinda hungry. again im not a redtail expert i use to know a few stuff on them but then stoped doing research. so you should try posting here http://www.redtailboas.com/. im a member there but havent been there in a wile. lol. hope i helped

If he is already skinny, and the mouse made no lump, I would feed him another mouse of the same size and feed a larger meal in about 7 days.

I would wait three or four days just for digestion sake before trying to feed again. If there was no lump the next day Im guessing the prey item was on the small side or he really didnt eat it. Out temps range from the high eighties and to the low ninetys. Hot spot maybe a little warmer yet. I believe that switching him over to rats would possibly help his weight come along quicker as the growth rate seems to be a bit higher when they are on rats. Pictures with something in them for size referance might help as well. Our boas sizes range greatly and even some of the older ones are not as large as ones a bit younger. Growth rate seems to be somewhat of an individual rate for each different animal.

Should he be waiting a week an a half between his last(yesterday) and next feeding? He's about roughly 2-2 1/2 feet long. I'm guessing. I just got him yesterday and havn't had a chance to see him fully stretched out so I'm guessing he's roughly that long. He's tried to strike at me a few times. But thats probably because he wasn't handled for a while...But the mouse he was fed was a sub adult, so I was thinking his next feeding I'll give him an older adult mouse. I've seen his girth and the adult mice here and the adult mice should be big enough for now. I was wondering? If I cut the mice backs when I feed them to him will they digest quicker, and give him more nurishment like they do to our corns?

The technique of making slits in the feeder I believe to be more effective in younger animal and digesting pinkies. I am not sure that it has much of an effect on them as they get older. Hurley would be the one to ask about this. Striking at you is a defensive response as he is not likely to be used to being handled given the notes about his previous care.
