Help! Places to keep my Corn snake over the summer?

Hi! I'm a college student going home over the summer and I don't have anywhere to keep my corn snake. I'm not going to be able to keep her at my house due to frightened relatives. My mom is totally okay with my snake, but we are staying with a relative who isn't. Go figure :( Does anyone know of any alternative places (pet stores, etc.) I can keep her over the summer?

I am looking for anywhere in Washington, D.C. or Maryland. I am willing to pay as well. I'm not even looking for a place that will feed her everyday or clean up the cage (I can come and handle all of that). Literally anywhere for her it be will do.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you :D

There may be a small chance. I have one friend in mind. Last time I let a friend watch over my baby corn snake for me she was careless and left the cage open and he escaped. He died three days later :(

So I do have a friend in mind...I'm just a little hesitant. I realize everyone may not be as responsible or care for my snake as much as I do and I would hate to have another accident like that.

Did you have to tell your relatives? Will you be sharing your bedroom with this particular relative? Being an animal lover all of my life, I find the least I say the better. There is nothing easier to keep quiet about then a corn snake. You put them in an appropriate size plastic box with locking handles. Get the sturdy top. Put UTH, and thermostat, ect. then slide everything under your bed. Don't mention the snake anymore. Pretend it died. Said relative will never know.

I'm not really into being deceiving, but if it's at all possible to pop him/her in a tote and slide him/her under your bed it would be the best for the snake. I would use paper towels as substrate, easier to explain than a random bag of aspen. You would also need to buy your mousicles on feeding day, and limit handling time til after everyone is in bed. If you aren't comfortable lying, begging & pleading with lots of tears is a timeless and effective way to get people to change their mind ;)

Thank you for your answers guys! I'm definitely considering sneaking her in. I'm just testing the waters to see what would be best for my little princess :). Sneaking her in or having a responsible friend babysit might be the best idea. I'm not sure how I feel about paying someone when I don't even want then to touch her or take care of her. I planned on visiting to feed her and handle her, etc.

The only thing I would NEED to pay someone for is maybe electricity? Since her UTH would be plugged up every hour on the hour.

Does anyone have a rough guess of how much I should pay someone a month? Maybe 100 a month? I have a thermostat so its not like the UTH will be sucking up the highest amount of electricity.

The minimum of $1.00 per day. That would be $30.00 or $31.00 per month. You could double that to $2.00 per day and that would encourage them to roll out a red carpet for you.

Can I tag a question onto this thread? We have a new cornsnake (a couple months old, I think. We've had him/her for 3 weeks.) 8 weeks from now we'll be gone for 3 weeks. Is this too long to leave a corn this age without feeding or should I find a babysitter?

Shericlue, I wish I lived closer to NY--I'd offer to babysit! I work at a college campus and often wonder what the students do when they leave campus for the summer...(ahem...not that pets are allowed on this campus...but it didn't stop me from having 2 humane society kitties in my dorm room when I was student there 20 years ago...ahem.)

Ha this made me laugh about sneaking her in! I'm living in a college apartment and when I was signing the thing before we moved in it said 'No pets allowed including reptiles' I was like damn.. but a few weeks later when I realised I could keep him locked in my room and the landlord would never know I brought him up here! That was nine months ago and now I have two snakes and my friend has a puppy in the apartment downstairs :D We got away with it and thankfully, I can bring my snakes back to my parents house for the summer!

I really wish you the best of luck and I would offer to take her but it might make visiting hard

The local reptile shop here in town (I know not much help there, but you could call around) offers pet babysitting. Their price is something like $1 a day per animal, plus the cost of food. They usually have space in the back, and if you trust the store, it should be safe. Sure a careless employee could lead to disaster, but it is a potential option. They might be more inclined if you bring the setup too. Then all you need is shelf space somewhere.

I would not leave an adult snake, let alone a young one by itself for 3 weeks. Even if it could go that long without food, what about water? The longest I go leaving mine alone is no more than a week or so, and I worry about them even then.

<snip>

True that...

This past weekend I snagged one of the coolest snakes on the planet; a 3-foot docile, ball-python-laidback, male, "False Water Cobra" for the price of a baby Falsie.

An exotic snake smarter than a tax accountant and potentially meaner than an IRS agent. Thrilling.

Just when the other half finished pounding me over the head for bringing it home, I put yootoobe on the networked Bluray, and sure enough - very first Falsie video I played announced that they are venomous.

Big mistake.

Never watch youtube in front of others.

Never try to sneak a 3-foot fake cobra in the house.

Now I have a Falsie on Craigslist...
