help with temperature please

i'm using a UTH for the warm side of my viv, and the temps are WAY too high (90 ON the substrate, 100 on the glass). so i went out and bought a rheostat to control how hot the UTH gets.

now, do i measure temp on TOP of the substrate, or do i measure on the actual glass??? i know the warm side should be in the mid 80s, but it seems quite a bit of difference from the top of the substrate (i'm only using about 1-1.5 inches of aspen) and the actual glass below.

i just don't want my new snake to be burned!

(p.s.-he hasn't gotten here yet, just trying to get things set up first!)

I'd go with the glass temp because if the snake burrows under the substrate and contacts the glass and it's too hot you could have troubles.

too high?

thank you.....that makes sense.

my temps have leveled off say 84 on the substrate and 90 on the glass.

should i cut it back even more, or is 90 ok as the max glass temp?

i'm just afraid if i cut it back more, the substrate's going to be too cool. :shrugs:
