Hemipenis troubles?

I use Carefresh as my substrate in my snakes cage. After my male bred, the next day I noticed a piece of Carefresh hanging from his vent, keeping a bit of his hemipenis out (1mm). I wet the Carefresh and pulled it out but a small piece was still in and his hemipenis completely retracted with the piece inside. Should I worry about this? He urinated while I was helping him out, so I know he was irritated, but I'm scared of infection. Any suggestions?

Take him to a qualified vet.

It seems to me like it would be a big problem. It could get infected and if it got really bad could potentially kill the snake.

Without taking him to a vet, is it possible to put him in with a female again, not to breed her, but to get him to stick out his hemipenis on his own so you could get this off of him?

I was going to suggest the same thing Amanda. Make sure if you do it, and in future breeding attempts to put them on paper towels or newspaper to avoid any substrate problems. Keep us updated, and good luck.

The vet said to watch for swelling and said he will probably pass it on his own because his body will push it out. I will watch him for a week, luckily nothing unusual visible today. :shrugs:

hemipene ?

I second that!!!!!!! I would suggest using cage liners. I use them only during breeding season because of that problem you are dealing with right now. I believe we all take the proper precautions to keep our snakes healthy. The liners are great! Not only are they cheap in price but you can see the evidence of a successfull breeding. " Male Spillage ". Hope your little guy will be ok.
