I use a pelleted pine bedding called equine fresh and it works great at getting rid of ammonia smell, but it's dusty.
Dusty to the point of dust collecting in my return air ducts. Lots of it, visibly.
I have a 20 year old honeywell envirocare HEPA air filter just sitting in the closet collecting dust (Pardon the pun.), and I thought I'd give it a try.
Also, while I personally don't think my place smells, I have a friend that remains quite vocal about odors, to the point of gagging when I open the rat room door, when he's standing 10 feet away.
I admit that when I go out for the night and come back I can smell it when I get back in the house, but only for a minute.
Well, long story short it makes a HUGE difference.
I put an air freshener refill INSIDE the filter, and due to the massive amount of air that it moves, it really makes a huge difference as well, as soon as 2 hours.
I had my friend that gags when I open the door to the rat room actually INSIDE the rat room playing with rat babies with no hint of a complaint.
I could kick myself for not thinking of it before.
