hi!! noobie here!!!!

mpharris1989

hi! i'm new!!!
Hey, my names michael!! I'm from San Antonio, Texas. I'm 18, and working my way through college. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine gave me an old glass aquarium that he doesn't need or want anymore. So i though i would clean it up, and maybe eventually put some sort of creature in it. I originally though fish would be nice, but i remembered that i had once long ago tried that route, and didn't seem to enjoy them much. So i thought that since it was more of a terrarium (not sure of spelling) than an aquarium, that i might as well get some sort of reptile.
So i pretty much did research on everything, and I think a snake would be a great pet for me. I don't want a huge one really such as the pythons or boas, but i don't want a slim garter snake either. So i came into conclusion with either a corn snake, king snake/milk snake, or ball python.
As of the moment, most of my research has made my oppinion lean towards the corn snake, so I was wondering if this is wise or not??

Hullo!!! I'm new to reptiles, but currently have a Cornsnake, and a Kingsnake. Both are wonderful, and are known to be good first snakes (although, if You're thinking of getting a Grey Banded KS, I've heard that they can be hard to feed. Mine's given me no problem)

:):):):)

Welcome!!!!

Definately get a corn! They are lovely little snakes, they dont mind handling, and are pretty easy to look after. I must warn you of one thing though..... they are addictive. I got my first in august 07, 2nd in sept 07, 3rd and 4th today, and I get my 5th on thursday!!! lol :)

Hi there!
Im pretty new to all this too- I just got 2 cornsnakes a couple months ago and dont regret the decision at all (like you I was looking between corns and kings). Maybe eventually Ill get a king, but am so happy with the ones I got (plus Ive started to enjoy the corn look a little better than the king).
Hope to see you around, and good luck with your decision!

Hey there! I certainly recommend a corn! They come in over a 100 different morphs (colors and patterns) and are great first snakes.
I have a ball as well... he is very good however he has a tendency to always bite for the face. (Even if he is not anywhere near my face)
A Sonoran Mountain King is next on my list.... I can't wait!

Welcome to your new addiction!

I do think they are the best beginner snake, there a few things to understand: hatchling corns are very wiggley and difficult to hold, not difficult in you can't do it. It's hard find the point to not squeeze them and still hang on. They are incredibly fast, and escape artists. They are fiesty, but that's probably a good thing, usually means they are good eater. Until they are several months old they aren't going to be happy just sitting with you. Most corns of any age like to move, so they will be happy gliding through your hands and fingers up your arm. good luck, susan

ok thanks, any other oppinions before i make my purchase (i might not even buy something till the spring when it warms up a bit to play it safe).

also so far i have a 10 gallon tank with a screen top (once the snake outgrows it, i'd be happy to buy a larger one), an undertank heater which i bought today, a heat lamp, some climbing toys, two hideouts, and a water bowl. I forgot to get the thermometer today too :( but thats ok.

And one last thing, at my petshop, should i buy 1 thermometer or 2, or instead get the thermometer/humidity gauge instead??

hey the thermometer/hydro guage instead- humidity is important to keep track of, especially when theyre shedding
cant wait to see pictures of your new baby when you get him/her!

Only if it's not one of those stick on ones.
The accurate thermometers or even hyrdrometeres should be digital.

If you've got the UTH you've no need for the heat lamp as well, I doubt it's going to be getting that frigid in san antonio.

Also I would recommend looking into a way to regulate your heating device, unregulated they can get up to tempatures that are very quickly unhealthy for a corn snake.

Welcome! :)

ya i just noticed that!!!!!!:uhoh:

and yes i bought a digital thermometer earlier today

and rigged it up about noonish

right now the temperature on the top of the aspen shavings over the heating pad is about 90

....so not good right?

so how should i regulate the temperature to get the warm side of the tank to be the ideal 80-85????

You need to purchase a thermostat or a rheostat or there are directions on this site for building your own rheostat for $7.

A thermostat is designed to keep a tank at a designated tempature that you set for it, turning the heater on and off to meet those needs.
A Rheostat is basically a fancy light dimmer that keeps constant power going to the UTH but only at a certain dial, the down side with rheostats is if your ambient (room) tempature changes you'll have to adjust the rheostat for that.

Hi my name is kenny! i am quite new to this too! i just bought a corn snake for my christmas! i aint had a problem with it! he is so loving.....he is only small but thats coz he is young! i have other pets too! like fish and cats.....i think you would enjoy it!

well thanks guys, right now i'm just trying to get the temps in my cage right.
it's sort of being difficult :smash:
but i have another thread under the husbandry one where i explain it if anybody wants to add some info. that would be very helpful

thanks again, michael

Just remember: while corns are great pets, you really need to make sure you have lid locks on your lid. Sooo many people who are new to corns don't realize how easily they escape from all sorts of containers. So I'd say that is another must for your list. Heavy books just don't do the trick!

Good luck!

ya so i've heard
....i've got straps on mine, and i'm gonna put some tubing for a fish aerator on the lineing of the edge, just to seal it a bit better :)

Welcome to the forum..Corn snakes are excellant starter snakes as they are relatively calm and easy to care for..So I would definitely suggest getting a corn..Good luck in whatever you choose :0)

thanks guys!!

im so excited, today i found a local petstore other than petco/petsmart that sells corns, and they have differnt morphs and everything.... anddddd theyre cheaper :)

i just need to finish up with my cage now, and wait for my next paycheck to come in

oh ya, i think i'm gonna get the ghost morph
