homemade cage furniture

Can all you people tell me about some of the homemade cage furniture you use. I've heard about the clay already (really cool). Thanks a lot for sharing!!!

PVC pipes work nice, both as hides and water cup holders (just glue a short section of it to the bottom of a tank, and it prevents the snake from toppling water bowls and getting water everywhere). Also, if you cut a long piece in half length wise and put it in your cage with one side of it on the warm side and one side of it on the cool side, the snake can change position without ever showing itself, which will make it feel more secure. This is especially good for those real nervous types.

Super sculpey is really cool stuff, you can bake it and it turns into a light sandable material that holds paint very well, though I don't paint mine, since super sculpey comes in so many different colors. It's a little pricey though, a small box of the stuff that holds about a lb is something like 12 bucks, but maybe that's just the college art stores trying to rip us off.

I have an old combat boot that was never worn because it was too small in one of my snake cages and my snake loves to hide in that.

The sculpey is expensive...

One 2 ounce block of it runs about $1.50. That's why the hide I have posted for sale in the misc. section is $35.00. When you take all of the cost for materials (clay and wire), I'm only making about $5.00 for labor on a hide which took 2 hours to make...talk about cheap labor! I am looking around to try to find a place to get the sculpey cheaper (so far no luck) so that I can offer the hides for sale at a cheaper price.

I bought a sampler pack of 30 (1oz) bars for $30 Canadian + Tax, at Lee Valley. They do have a web site and offer it for $19.95 usd. You find it under the childrens section.

I was just looking on the box for the contents and read this "should be used for decorative purposes only, not with food, beverages or smoking materials."

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help every one!!! Ill try your ideas out and post some pics later!!! Thanks!

Has anybody tried air-dry clay (like the terra-cotta color Self- Hardening Mexican Pottery Clay from Amaco)? And is a water-based urethane type sealer acceptable?
