If I get too busy and can't get to cleaning their boxes soon enough, how does the ammonia build-up affect them?

Have you ever stuck you nose in a bottle of cleaner with ammonia. It is very caustic. Burns the mucus membranes in your nose mouth and lungs. Will kill you if concentrated enough. Generally considered to be not a good thing.
 
Ammonia build up can cause respiratory damage, and even trigger mycoplasma flare-ups which can lead to pneumonia.

This is why its not good to keep rats in glass tanks.
 
Thanks for all your info.

I was away on trip for 5 days and didn't have time to do the cleaning before I left. So it was almost 2 wks and I did smell some amonia. That's why I's concerned if that would give them some perminent or long term effect. But they all seems fine till now.
 
When I first started breeding rats I noticed that even though they did not smell bad to me when I left them over 7 or 8 days I would see sneezing going on by the rats. I created a chart now and use it so that I know who was cleaned and when and it really helped me get into a routine of cleaning the rats every week and hamsters every 30 days. Everything to me is so much easier if there is an established system. Just the way my mind works.
