How I tell if my snake has to poop or not..

I wasn't sure where to put this, but then I remembered that the "Help! My snake keeps pooping on me" threads are usually posted here so I figured it was all right to post it here.

Two days after Xavier eats, I take him out of the tank to see if he's ready to poop. If he is, his "poop chamber" (that's what I call the area a little before the vent) is kind of bulging when you look at it from the side.
The pics are rather blurry b/c he didn't want to stay still and I had to hold him between my toes and one hand (The other hand had to hold the camera and press the shutter) but you can still kinda see the bulge.

I hold him for a while and watch him with an eagle eye. When he goes still (not even flicking his tongue out) and his vent starts to pulse, I know he's about to let loose and I shove some newspapers under him. Then I fold up the newspapers and throw them in the garbage. No need to play "find the poop in the aspen and scrape it off the glass" in the tank. I probably won't be able to do this when I have lots of snakes but I do this with him for now. The other babies are on paper towels and I just replace those whenever I see they've gotten soiled.
Gosh! I never thought I'd be writing about how I know when my snake is about to poop. :) Hope this helped

That's a neat little trick you've got there. I get really nervous when I hold my snakes and they go still because of that pooping thing. I've been pooped on three times and it's really nasty. If I don't want to be pooped on what I do is give them a bath. Baths always seem to make them lose control and it's amazing the amount of crap that can come out. Lol.

Thanks for the info (though it's wierd to talk about snake poop) I hope my baby gives me a warning. I wouldn't like getting pooped on very much. I've only handled her 3 times so she'll have plenty of times to get me. Is it worse than cat and dog poop? They've never pooed on me either but I always have to clean it up.:p

It's much worse than dog and cat poop but only because they do it on you!!!! Lol. The amount of waste an adult corn can produce really is amazing sometimes and it's not particularly pleasant to get it all over your shirt. And it stinks!!!!

We've been doing that with our beardies for months to get 'em to poop if they haven't been for a couple of days... nice to know it works for corns too... thanks! :)

Oh, and Kilojara16... As to whether it's worse than cat or dog poop... Well, I dunno 'bout a full adult corn... but if it's anything like a beardy.. OOOOH yeah! Especially when you're wandering around with them clutching your T-Shirt and they just up their tails and unleash down your chest, heh.

Fortunately I've not had a corn poop on my yet though :)

I held my normal adult corn ( Gerr) last night for the first time while under my care. At first i though he was going to sleep but it turns out he shat all over my bed! Its ALLOT of poo too. It smells HORRIBLE and its very hard to clean. I got osme on my pants too .... so i changed my clothes. The poo soaked through all three layers of sheets.

Oh boy, does it smell bad. I always hold my breath and hold the newspapers as far away from my face as I can as I run toward the garbage can.
I once was wearing my mom's white shirt and he dumped on that. She wasn't very happy but not raging mad as I expected.
Then he pooped on my favorite pajama pants but I just cut out the soiled parts and wear the pants with holes in them lol.
Xavier's poo is usually very liquidy but this time he didn't want to come out to get a drink b/c he's in shed and his poop was more like..dog poo or something. More solid and less liquid. And there was a LOT of it this tim.e Ok WOW this is getting really gross so I'll stop.

glad potpouri plug it in plug it in

I know my corns are about to poo when they grab a the newspaper, a box of matches and announce that they will be "unavailable" for a half an hour so tape ER and hold all calls...

Love the bath thing!!!

Oh I could just kiss who ever it was on here that told me about it! I swim all of our guys on the 2nd -4th night after they eat, and they always poo in there then pull the plug and a quick bleach rinse! They seem like they wait to go there now. I had to miss one night and all of them hit the water and exploded!! I guess they had their little tails crossed all night.

Missy that was great!!!!

Why cut a hole in the pants? Just wipe off all the poo then throw them in the washing machine.

Well, I tried to wipe it off, but the poop is like black or very dark brown and my pants were white with green frogs on them. IT left disgusting dark stains on them so I just cut the spots out. Plus I really didn't want to get any snake poop in the washing machine..

Can someone tell me how to do the whole bath thing? I just heard about it now. It sounds great! My fiancee will love it, cuz she's been pooped on twice! LOL!

Thanks,

Rainey

You fill the bath tub with a few inches of water that should feel cool to your touch. Not ice cold, but cool. If it feels warm to your hand, it's too hot for the snake (consider your body temperature).
Put the snake in and let him swim around for a while and the water and exercise will usually stimulate him into pooping.
You should give him the bath 2 days after eating. Mine always poops 2 days after eating like clockwork.

One of my corns hates baths and always tries to slither up the side and escape. It's really funny to watch but I take her out as soon as she's done her business because I can tell that she's miserable and just wants to curl up in her hide again (she's a very quiet snake and just likes to hide away).

You wouldn't bathe a hatchling in a full size bathtub would you? Would a sink be better? I don't have any plastic containers I could use for a baby bath.

Oh no, of course not. I assumed Rainy had an adult corn...
Yes, I bathe all my snakes in the bathroom sink. Not only are they too small to take a swim in the tub, but my mom would become hysterical if she saw any snakes in her bathtub. I was thinking of using the other bathtub but my dad uses that and he doesn't like snakes much either.
So they're confined to the sink. :)

Afew other tips I've found for bathing are 1 if you have city water you may need to use a little water conditioner like Repti Safe. We forgot once and our girl went nuts. 2 If your snake is still acting spooked by being in the tub after several times try dimming the lights. One of ours was so afraid ( she's always shy) but now I just turn off the light and swim her with the night light on. Now she loves her bath time and is very relaxed. 3 Put an island in the center of the tub. We use a heavy ceramic water dish. They seem to like having a place to rest and I like giving them the option of swimming or not.

We use the big tub for all of ours adult and hatchling, I like to give them lots of room to slither around and exercise. With the babies I usually a few inches of the back higher end dry so they can get out if they want and they all have the island also. We also change the water between each snake even if they didn't poo in it. I couldn't prove it but I think it makes the second one in nervous. So everybody gets fresh water.

A little long winded today!:D Oh well hope this helps!

Colleen

Very good idea

I'm probably gonna buy some repti-safe for their baths and that island idea is really clever- I've got this really big bowl that I could turn up-side-down and use as one.:)
