How much substrate

So I've done some searching about substrate, and I've come to the overwhelming consensus that aspen is the way to go (which I am currently using), but I haven't seen any suggested depths. So my question is how much is too much? Especially for hatchlings since they like to burrow a lot.

If you're using a UTH then mine come with an instruction not to put more than one inch over the position of the mat. Check the instructions that came with yours - you might find the same.

Apart from that, it depends what your guys like. Start with 2 inches in areas away from the UTH and if they like burrowing in it, you can always make it deeper. Just be aware that the deeper it is, the more likely it is that you'll keep thinking they've escaped because they won't be visible!

I tend to build up the substrate in the corners of the viv, as this is where mine poop most often.

Ah yes, the packaging does say no more than 1 inch of substrate over the heater. So if I felt necessary I could then increase the rest to two to three inches deep, and extra in the corners sounds good as well. I figure if I don't see him in either of his hides or in the fake plant he's burrowed somewhere, since I have four clamps holding the screen lid down to the aquarium, no movement at all.
