How Often Do They Poop??

So I originally read that Corn Snakes poop only once a week, usually a few days after they eat. Well it has been 5 days since we fed ours and so far he has pooped like 3 times (possibly 4 now that I'm looking in the viv.....) so is it normal for him to poop this much? Also I'm a little freaked now b/c I just read a bunch of posts of people talking about their snakes pooping on them!!!!! This has not happened yet but we have only had him not quite a full 2 weeks. I REALLY want to avoid this happening b/c we are already freaked out about the chance of Salmonella. Since Salmonella comes out in their poop this would not be very cool lol. Any advice? Thanks!!!

I owned a snake since the late 2004 and still don't know. I clean the cage once or twice a week. but I don't study the poo rate.
You will get poo on. Trust me. It makes you bond with the snake.
But fret the Salmonella. After handling, you must wash you hands and whatever to reduce the chances. And it more likely you"ll get Salmonella for you local restaurant than your pet. When it's about to poop it will stop and life it tail. and they usually poop three day after feeding but that vary with the snake.

Enjoy!!

You have had the snake for nearly 2 weeks, but it was fed (hopefully) before you got it, so thers some duke in the pipeline. Once thats cleared its natural for the snake to poo-doo about 3-5 days after a meal (depending on temps and size of the prey item). But that doesnt mean bust out the timer, and count, its a natural process. As for the snake pooing on you, if you are worried about salmonella you might need more info. I don't want to scare you, but you "can" contract salmonella from any part of your snake including a snake bite... It is in their poop, which is spread on the micron level across the entire cage, and virtually impossible to avoid. Just sanitize the cage regularly, and clean your hands and you could most likely handle a dropping with no fears.

Yes he had been fed a day or two before we got him. We are going to feed him every Monday so just a few more days. So I know they poo every 3-5 days or whatever, after they eat, but my concern is HOW MANY TIMES are they supposed to poop within that one week after being fed? B/c I was told it should only be ONCE a week....?????? But like I said he's hit 4 already after being fed this one time b/c he had already pooped I think the day we got him after the pet shop had fed him last....And what can I do to avoid getting pooped on??

To answer the last question first... Corn Snakes aren't known for pooping on you. You can handle your snake a lot, and it getting used to you will lessen the chances. If this were a kingsnake or a blood python you'da been fece'd a few times over by now. Don't worry about quantity though because a snake will poop as much as necessary. What you want to worry about is consistency. If it has runny poop you might want to consult a vet. If the poopies are firm, you should be ok. If you worry take a sample to your vet and they should be able to look at it under a microscope for an initial screening and let you know if theres parasites (being the first thing i'd check if i worry about a "regularity" issue). Do you feed more than one prey item per feeding? because that might stimulate multiple defecations.

Who told you it would only poop once a week btw? because thats an interesting selling point... I would never had imagined someone calculated it, or timed feces... heh kinda new to me.

I was just told that they only poop once after they are fed. I've actually been told that by a few people, one of the people that told me is the owner of a boa constrictor....lol.....so I dunno maybe that's just how his snake is. Anyways the poop seems solid but a little mushy. So far he hasn't poo'd on me so I'm gonna try to keep it that way lol. Sometimes when I hold him he will crawl around alot and stop. Usually he just stops and looks around but now I'm gonna be paranoid and look to make sure he doesn't lift his tail!!! lol :)
