How old is my snake ?

hemolymph

New member
I measured my baby snow corn snake yesterday when I fed her two thawed pinkies, and the best measurement I got was about 14-15 inches.

Can anyone give me a good guess as to how old my snake is ?

It's very hard to tell the age of a snake because their size is dependant on how much they have eaten. The more food, the bigger the snake.

However, you can be fairly sure that a snake of that size was hatched in 2003.

There is a very small chance that it is from 2002, but this would only be the case if you got it from someone that was basically starving it. The only place I can think of that would do that would be a petstore.

I did get it from PETCO.
I read on a website that newborn hatchlings are 8 to 13 inches. So if mine is closer to 14 inches, shouldn't it have been born just recently ?

Only a handful of cornsnakes have hatched this year. Actually many cornsnakes have only just started laying their eggs for this season. Since your snake is already 14 inches (and I'd say the average hatchling is about 10 inches), it's likely that he is from 2003.

I'm guessing here, but I'd say that the youngest it could be is 5 months old, but its probably more like 6-8 months. I'm saying that because the latest I've ever heard a cornsnake hatching is in late October.

From what I've read and comparing to other corn snakes that i've read and seen, I'd say 6-8 is a good guess. Someone said 8-10 months is a possiblity.. and they may be right if my snake was underfed at the pet store..
But I've seen a 10 month old snake, and it's so much bigger compared to mine.

Thanks ;-)

hi Amanda E --I was reading what you said about the corn snakes having to be at least 5 months old. I think the guy at the pet shop mine said mine was 5 months but if is older than that is there anyway to tell?
Also, I have discovered that there are not alot of Petco fans here. I bought my snake there -so far I have no complaints, I had planned on buying the frozen mice there, but how do I know the mice are quality mice? What do I look for? Tks Kellbell

I had babies hatching out at the end of April. I know of some people who had babies hatching before that. I think it is possible that yours is an early 2004 hatchling. I personally would just choose a date and give it a birthday! Is that a recent picture? If so, then your snake looks to be about the same size as some of my 2004 hatchlings.

By the way, how did you measure her?

hi ya, we bought our first snake Amber ... who is an amber .... last year in june .. so she is now 13 months old ... we bought last week an albino motley ..( aparently not too common .. is this true ?) they told us he was a yearling .. but he is significantly smaller than amber as you can see in the pic. what age would you think he is... we feed ours every 5 days on the relevant size mice ... could he really be a yearling ??????
thanks.

Albino motleys are quite common.

As for size, can you put something in the picture to compare them to? Something like a dollar bill or other object that we can all relate size to?

Also, a brighter picture may help. Just based on what I can see, if your new snake is a yearling, it is either on the small size or Amber is VERY big. That is why I would like something else in the picture, also.

Honestly....

That snake could really be ANY age. Just ask Siva; she has a two year old (named Alex, I think) who's even smaller than my snake was when we first got her, and she was only a few months old, and TINY! (Of course, Alex has a kinky tail and some health problems, but my point is that you really can't tell!) I agree with everyone else who has posted, though. It really is most likely that it is about 6-8 months old.
One thing is for sure, though. Your snake is adorable!

Amber & Motley - They're the same age! Apparently

Hi ,

Here are some pics comparing them to a ruler its a 6 inch ruler,
These two are apparently the same age ( yearlings) and we bought him (motley) under the information in the shop that he was fairly rare, and we paid a fair amount for him to.. we would never take him back as he has settled in and we love him! But we are just trying to find out what exactly is going on with the shop that sold us him. Is there any way that albino motleys could be a little harder to come by on this side of the pond (in the uk?) ??

Thanks.

WOW...that's an amazing difference in size. Honestly, I would think that the little one almost has to be a yearling. It is really too long to be a 2004 hatchling. It is VERY small for a yearling, however. That is definitely a sign of underfeeding. I don't know how long the pet store had it, but the fault either lays with the store or the breeder.

Your other snake looks quite LARGE for a yearling, by the way. Out of curiosity, how much do you feed it? And how often? I am asking because I have a couple of 2003's that are larger than the rest of my 2003 snakes. They are on the same feeding schedule, though. I just thought it would be interesting to compare feeding schedules.

And I guess it's possible for amel motleys to be more rare over there, but I wouldn't think so. There are several members from the UK here. Maybe you should make a new post and direct it toward people from there. You could put it in the title so they would know to look at it.

Our feeding schedule

Hi ya,

well our feeding schedule is for Amber - 2 rat pups ( first time for the rat pups last week) before that it was just 2 fuzzies every 5-6 days, we have the feeding schedule from the wholesalers that the pet shop get him thru and it was very few and far between, from at one point only just making it in to feeding twice in one month... poor sod didnt know what hit him when he got to us :) we feed him 2 pinkies now every 5 days, this will be his 3rd feed with us. He has had no problem at all eating, which i feel is good.
We managed to get another number from the pet shop, who all of a sudden became helpful, and apparently it looks like he came from your side of the pond (US) so we have an international viv!!

You should probably be careful with feeding 2 rat pups per feeding to Amber. I have some snakes that will only eat rat pups. They tend to be the ones I really have to watch the weight on. They seem to get overweight faster when they are on rats instead of mice. All of my yearlings get fed 1 appropriately sized mouse per week. I have a wide range of sizes in my 2003's. I have one little jungle corn that seems to not be able to handle more than a peach fuzzy per week. She is growing quite slow. It'll be 3-4 more years before she is able to breed at the rate she is going! I also have a couple of BIG 2003's. They are eating 1 adult mouse per week.

Anyway, just watch for signs of obesity. I actually think one rat pup might be enough for her, though.

And I am glad the albino motley is doing well for you. Hopefully the little one will start to grow quickly and catch up with Amber!

Good luck and keep us posted!

signs of obesity?

hello there !

ok before you mentioned looking for signs of obesity, i know it seems like a silly question but what are the signs of obesity in corns ?

If thats the case with rat pups then we might finish what we have then go back to mice, as thats what got her to that stage as it is, then maybe just throw in the occasional pup rat for a change.

thanks again.. i'm still trying to get a good pic of them that really shows their colours any suggestions ?

x :wavey:

The three main signs of obesity (that I know of anyway), are:
1. You can see the snake's skin in between the scales.
2. You start seeing fat pads on the snake. This usually happens towards the tail first.
3. I've noticed that on the couple of snakes that I dealt with this on, their scales look kind of crinkled whenever they had been laying curled up under their hides. Look at the points where the snake's body was actually bent.

I hope the last one makes sense...

As for taking pics, what camera are you using? One of the main things you could try is to use a lamp of some sort to give you more light.
