well the time has come for me to get a bigger tank for my corn snake. A friend of mine had an old aquarium that she used to have turtles in it, its a very good size, however it needs a good cleaning. I dont want to put my cornsnake it the tank before I clean it.

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to properly clean the tank so that it will be safe for my snake. Are their any household products that I could use I.E soap and water?? or do they sell specific cleaners for this situation.

Any help is appreciated..

thank you..

I use bleach on my 10 gallon. I use the cap as a measuring tool. For every one capful of bleach, 10 capfuls of water. That dilutes it a lot. So scrub the tank down with that then rinse, rinse and rinse again. Then let the tank air out for a bit. Make sure there are no bleach fumes when you go to put the little guy in the tank.

I use the Clorox Anywhere. It works great and kills all the germs and once it's dry its as safe as if I had used water. I have talked to my Herp vet about it and he had no issues with it either. Hope that helps, it's pretty inexpense and you really can't goof it up.

If you need to remove algae from the tank, you can scrape it with a metal aquarium cleaner, or use a paste of coarse salt and water as an abraisive. Bleach diluted 1 part bleach to 10 parts water is a good disinfectant, but be sure to rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, and then rinse some more before putting your snake in it.
