How do I resize photos for an avatar? I have successfully resized but then it is not the right file ext. When I resize a jpg it turns into a bmp.:shrugs:

Usually depends on the software you are using for the editing, I use IRfanView, and it always gives me a selection of extensions to choose from when I save, it never goes to a default.

Maybe check the options section of your software and see if you have an auto save format box checked, or something along those lines.

I use IRfanView,

That is what I use. I checked the settings. When you save do you save "save as" or "save"? Either way it didn't give me an option. But I will mess around with it. Thanks.

Always save as... I'll check it out as well and make sure I didn't miss something.

Ok, right under file name it gives you the option of file type to choose from (when doing a save as), additionally and extra small window pops up in the upper right corner that asks what quality of .jpg/gif you want it saved as.

I can't recall if I ever did anything upon installation to make these settings the norm or not.

I'm pretty sure you can save it from Paint with any file extension you want.

If you want to edit or create, or in fact do anything that the pricey Photoshop does, try a FREE program called Gimp2 (I don't like putting links in forums, so Google it). I have been using it for several years. I'm not proficient, but I've used it to make some nice stuff.
I took a quick pic from my phone to make my avatar for this forum, it's small so it's hard to tell, but it's actually a cartoon of me.

It's shareware so if you're a real geek you can download the source code and make your own plug-ins and edit the program. They also accept programming from users and review it for adding to the program, so it is always improving.

Thanks everyone. Irfranview worked. Dale was right I had to pick the file extension when I saved.:dancer:

I will also check out Gimp2.:spinner:
