How to use a UTH?

I feel like an idiot, but I don't understand how the UTH is supposed to work.

I understand how to set it up (or so I think), but I don't understand how you can regulate how warm it gets and how to have it stay in a certain temperature range.

Originally I thought that once the area reached a certain temperature, the pad would turn off and turn back on as needed (as does a fish tank heater). Though I recently found out that this isn't true and that it stays on permanently, regardless of temperature. I also thought that you could adjust the strength, but it seems that this also is not true.

So, how is it supposed to work? I need it to warm my hot area to about 85 from 76-78 in the winter and from 80-82 in the summer for a 55 gal tank.

You need a thermostat! A thermostat does exactly this. I got mine off Amazon for $30. You plug your heat mat into the thermostat, plug the thermostat into the wall, and you can set the temperature on the thermostat and it will regulate the UTH for you. :)

OH MY THAT IS SMART! Thank you! Haha, sorry I was so confused! Would you mind linking me a thermostat that would work or the exact name of yours? I am terrible at looking up things online and the guy at the pet store had NO IDEA what I was talking about so I don't think they have one, haha.

Yeah, I don't see many thermostats at pet stores.

Mine is a Hydrofarm MTPRTC thermostat and it's cheap, but it works fine so far. I see thermostats by Helix Controls and Ranco recommended often, and Herpstats. They are more expensive, but very reliable. :)
