Humidity

What's the optimal range of humidity for a corn snake? My corn feels rather dry right now. Was thinking the humidity might be a little low, i'm not even sure what it is. i've gotta go by a humidity thermometer.

i'd spray some water in the vivarium and be aware of the snake needs without buying a humidity thermometer. depending on your heating method, you can get the water dish closer to the light

40-50% or so.

Btw, you're looking for a 'hygrometer'.

yea i couldn't think of the name for the life of me. after i posted, i decided to give him a bath, give him a little moisture. it was then that i discovered why he felt so dry. he's shedding. first shed for me, now i know the signs. when i put him in the water, he started moving around, and pieces of skin started coming off, so i looked at his eyes and they were blue. hope his shed goes well, but from the way he was shedding off small pieces at a time, i figure it won't be a nice clean one piece shed. that also explains why he has been refusing food for the last 2 days. don't worry, every week that passes i learn a little more through experience, and eventually you'll rarely see my questions up here =P

Better to ask questions, than to have something go wrong and wish you had asked! Like giving him a bath. :nope:
If he sheds in pieces the humidity is too low. You can increase the size of the water bowl and if you are housing him in a glass aquarium with a screen top, you can put a towel over half of the top to help hold in moisture.
If your snake doesn't get all the skin off, put him in a container with moistened moss or paper towels for about 30 minutes, that should get the rest of the shed off

If he's in blue, technically he still won't shed for another 5-7 days. Usually they go blue, clear, and then shed within 3 days or so after they clear. So he might not really be ready anyway. I would just mist the tank and place a wet paper towel or moist hide in there.

I take it the shed is why he hasn't been eating, so I should probably just wait until he's done to try and feed him again probably?

Not necessarily. I have some snakes that will eat no matter what is going on and others that won't eat while they're going to shed. It depends on the snake. I'd try to stay on schedule and if he doesn't want the food then wait until the next time.

Yea, he ate last... Friday. He's on the 5 day schedule since he's still young. I tried after 5 days last time, then twice more after that. I'll wait a few more days and see if he eats.

Just don't offer food more often than you normally would. If he doesn't eat now, wait the normal 5-7 days and then try again. The best advice I got was to not try too often, and actually wait longer than normal. They do just fine missing a meal.
