Hydrofarm with Ceramic Heat Emitter

I am thinking about getting some stuff for my sister to get a corn and was wondering if the hydrofarm thermostat would work with a ceramic heat emitter (that's a bulb with no light) that she already has? Anyone have any ideas?

It would work, but it is not ideal nor recommended. Proper thermostat functionality is highly dependent on it's probe placement, and a heating device like a ceramic emitter would make the ideal probe placement for a well controlled warm hide very tricky.

It might be something to experiment with if you had an extra viv and an IR temp gun, so you wouldn't have to subject a snake to a potentially hazardous enviornment. After all that trouble though, I'd just spend the 25 bucks on the UTH.

It actually does work, although I'm not recommending it either. Here is a picture of the hydrofarm thermostat. http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTP...UTF8&qid=1362436092&sr=1-2&keywords=hydrofarm

You can see in one of the customer images that it does have a probe to detect the temperature, and when it dips below your preset temp, it will turn on the ceramic heat emitter (CHE). I've used it this way, and it will work.

I'm not recommending this heat source for two reasons. Corns need belly heat to aid digestion, and a CHE will not provide that. In addition, it will dry out your viv and you will need to be constantly adding back humidity. I agree that an under tank heater is a better option.

Thanks, I'll probably just get the thermostat for now but I definitely will also switch to an under tank heat mat soon though.

Hi,

We have several Hydrofarms and they're rated for 1000 watts. I can't imagine having to use a heat emitter over 150 watts or so.

I also think a properly sized UTH is a better heat source than a ceramic emitter or a light. At least for snakes.

good luck!
