I feel so mean...

I have rats and got them with the intention of breeding to feed my snakes. Since I found out I was going to have a baby myself. I decided I didn't need another project. I gave the male away and am in the process of finding homes for the females.
Well yesterday morning I woke up to find my first set of pinks and when I came home from work, I fed them off to my little snakes. Now I look at the mother rat and she just sits in her hide depressed and I'm sure wondering what the mean lady did with her babies. As silly as it sounds I feel bad for her...and a little guilty.
Anyway thank you for taking the time to read this, I had to tell someone I'm a mean baby killer. I couldn't tell my husband cause he thinks it's mean to feed of cute little rats and mice, he wouldn't understand.
Someone please tell me it's just my pregnancy hormones making me a big softy...I mean really, my snakes got to eat!

I know what you mean. I accidently got live pinks from the store (I didn't check the bag) and didn't notice til I got home. I feed frozen, so I had to kill the pinks. I was very very upset, without pregnancy hormones.

With rats especially I always feel guilty, which is why I don't really breed them much for feeders, and when they do breed I never cull all the babies so the rat has some to nurse. I also have far too many rat keepers =)

With mice and mean ASF rats I don't mind at all, but then I don't keep any of those for pets. I still tend to always leave 2 or 3 of a litter for the moms to nurse but that's more because I need older mid size live prey for my ball python.

sad

One time I ordered a few prekilled baby mice....when I got home they were still alive, but paralyzed! It was sooo horrible I was crying I felt SO bad for them!

Hi Guys,

I also have rats for breeding food for the snakes...but I always leave one or two for the mom to raise...I was SUPER lucky to get blues out of my fawn female so I am keeping those two, also keeping two fawn hoodies as I have always wanted one.

But last night was the night that I had to "harvest" the rest of the rat fuzzies (they are Peach fuzzies at the moment)...and I will never leave it that late to harvest them again.
