I lost one yesterday

luvofthechase

usually confused
My little normal Jackson that i had metioned regurged his fuzzy last sunday i found belly up in the viv monday AM  ..... still havent figured out what was wrong with him, i dont think he was ever healthy even from the start... i bought him and my snow Salizar from the same store, and they have been housed together brom the time they were tiny hatchlings (or so i was told). So far Salizar shows NO signs of being ill at all. he downed his food in record time last night, and is fat and healthy..... needless to say as soon as i find a vet that deals in herps ill be having him tested for parasites.
Jackson has allways had a belly that felt squishy... i just figured that this was something that could vary from snake to snake. Guess i was wrong.
Needless to say he will not be replaced untill i know for sure that Salizar is clean of parisites.

Oh' I am very sorry to hear that, it is always hard when you lose a loved one. But I always believed that Pet shops are not great with taking care of pets, so I personally don't think it’s your fault.

If you are going to look for another one I would look for a herpetology society near you. It might take longer to find one but they usually cost less and they very rarely have sicknesses.

But I am very sorry you have lost a loved one

yeah, no kidding. this particular shop had a fairly good rep. in the area, as the owner *supposedly* was a herp. major in college.
The red flags went up for me when i went back to ask for advice, i was told i should not research online becuase there was a lot of bad information out there. Found out after reading many forums here that much of the info i had recived from him was DEAD WRONG.
Fortunately i live about 3 hrs drive from a decent corn snake breeder, so ill be getting any future corns from him.

I do take great joy in the fact that i am currently in negotiations on buying the pet store that i work for... if i do, i will be implementing a reptile department in the store (after gaining the nessissary knowledge to do it right), which, with this other place's rep. for everything else, i aught to be able to put his store out of buisness before the year is out :crazy02:

I'm so sorry your snake died.

The owner of my local pet store gave me horrible information too. He told me to feed corns crickets! and that they didnt need any heat! and to use sand! If I had followed his advise my snakes would probly be dead by now.

*edit* I know that they can go without heat if the room is kept at ideal temps, but my house gets down to around 45 degrees inside during the winter and I told him that. :nope:

Some Quick Info

Yes’ I know I have posted this same response many times, but I think it calls for it again. Herpetology society seeks what is best for the snake, where pet shops just want the money and don’t care about the snake. Several herpetology societies if they don’t think you will take good care of their Corns they wont sell you them. Whereas Shops just want money and very commonly give out bad advice. Sometimes you are better off when pet shops get new kids in the reptile department because many times they have experience and can tell you what is right. The societys even offer lower prices many times, because the pet shops falsley advertise their snakes.

I have only been a corn owner for nearly 7 months now, but still learn many new things every day. And most of the things that people say have to be cross-referenced and checked again.

Too true, in most cases....
I'm generally the first to defend a pet shop when i think they have been wrongly accused of mistreatment/etc. becuase i know what it is like. I run our small animal dept. right now, and while i try to make sure to match up the appropriate pet for the owner, sometimes mistakes get made. We have been known to turn away people that we dont think can care for the critter in question on occasion.

I'm sorry to hear about your snake. You might want to house the next one seperately from now on. It could be that it was too stressed from the presence of the other to eat and thrive.

Thats the plan with the next one, mostly becuase the one i have left will be nearly a year older than the next one i get, so to avoid feeding my older snake an $80.00 meal...
I wont get into the argument about housing snakes apart or together. I weighed the arguments towards both directions carefully before i made the decision to house together. Being as they had been together since birth (clutch mates), i felt that the stress was not the cause. Of course, i could be wrong.
