I picked up a BP

After a very hard time with Ziggy, you can read my new post in the Health Issue section, I have picked up a Ball Python. :)

I'm having some heating issues right now. I have a dial thermometer on him substrate (the vivarium said that is what they do) and on the cool side it reads around 80-83 and I am able to do that with a heat lamp.

The warm side I am heating using a UTH, Monty is currently sitting on the thermometer that I have in his hide but last time I looked it was at 90.

Do you guys who own BP have any better suggestions?

Awesome that you have a BP!

I just keep my room pretty warm (around 77) and I have a humidifier in the room. I have a heat mat regulated to be 92F, and I place a towel over the top of the mesh lid to keep in heat an humidity. This keeps it at 90-93F of the hot end, and around 80 for the cool end.

Hope that helps and good luck!!!

Cool! We just got our first Ball. She is soooo sweet. I am having issues with humidity. My warm side is 90-92-with uth. The cool side is 70-71. The room is the warmest room in the house. She just took her first feeding with us. (knock wood) We also use a digital thermometer. And a digital one for humidity. Good Luck. They are awesome.:spinner:

HOORAY FOR ALL THE NEW BP OWNERS!!!

The cool side can be a bit cooler, but other than that, sounds like you are doing a great job!

Just make sure to keep the humidity up!

That was probably the most epic journey I've ever taken.

My plan was, go to Lowe's and get the thermometer, then go to Michael's and pick up some leaves.

First it took me 1.5 hours to get to Reno because of the snow. By the time I got there is was dark and I could not see three feet in front of me. I'm driving up and down the main street where Lowe's is suppose to be, and I can't find it. I pulled into about 6 other shopping centers. I went to OSH, I went to PetsMart, I want to Ace Hardwear, I went to Home Depot...nothing. I finally did manage to find Michael's and get some way cool plants. They then told gave me directions to Lowe's. I finally made it after 2 hours of looking.

Anyway, got his Acu-Rite thermometer. I just put the probe right in his substrate, hooked the UTH up to a heater, put black construction paper around three sides of his viv, washed plants and stuck him in. His thermometer was reading 90.9, but then Irwin decided to curl around it (its in his warm hide) and it dropped to 82.6 probably because it's off the substrate. His cool side is reading 72.3 because I have the lamp of that side. I have a towel covering 3/4 of the tank, but the cool side is still not 80. Ambient is reading 79. Humidity is reading 56%

Does all of this sound okay? Also, for the ambient temp, is it okay to stick the dial up on the glass?

I'll post pictures when I am home. Irwin is at the boyfriend's place.

Yeah i think you hit the nail on the head.

I found that humidity does not really need to be high all the time. Best bet is to get a mist spray bottle and give the viv a spray once a day.
