Ikea Cabinet Project!

plasticknives

the bee's knees: all six
I'm building my own corn snake enclosure my modifying an old Ikea cabinet,
and I was hoping People could give me a heads up on a couple of things:
Keep in mind I'm not going to get my snake until september, so there should be loads of time for the enclosure to dry/air out.

If I use wood glue to make sure things are secure, will it be safe once it's dry/i've painted over it?
the brand is Elmers Pro Bond Wood Glue (interior)

Second, is window sealant/ silicone safe to use as a seal for the joints?
Can I paint over it or will the paint just flake off?

Lastly: what kind of paint would you recommend to coat everything in? I'm looking for something waterproof that I'd be able to wipe down thoroughly every so often.

I'm more into the designing of the cage and I'm not much of a carpenter (thus the use of old Ikea furniture) so any tips on making this easier would be GREATLY appreciated!

Wood glue is fine to hold the joints together, and if used properly, you should not have any squeezed out of the joints.

Silicone is used in Fish aquariums, so I am sure that you can use it to caulk the corners of your enclosure. If you are using glass, then get the aquarium silicone. You can also get silicone that is paintable (will say this on the tube)

If you are using paint, then I would use a semi-gloss latex based paint. The semi gloss will help a little with providing a bright environment, and the latex based will allow you to wipe with a wet sponge without taking the pait off. But you will still want to use some sort of a clear protectant coat on it.

I saw that you are using contact paper but I still thought that I would tell you want kind of paint to use. I am building a cage for my red tails and I am tiling the inside. was just going to pait it, but decided that the tile would be easier to clean and keep from molding.

Good luck with your project.
