Seeing all these breeding pix got me to wondering: if a female snake reaches sexual maturity at 300g/3 years of age, when do snake become 'interested'?

I understand that when breeding, snakes should be of the proper weight/size, but in the wild, do they intuitively know when to 'mate'? do they at an earlier age? And if so, is it usually fatal (prompting the 300g minimum)?

Just curious if they had a developement stage like humans:
before puberty, there's no interest.
after puberty, there may be interest, but no maturity.
