Does anyone know if it is possible to teach snakes tricks? Obviously not things like sit or anything, but a while ago when I was watching America's Funniest Videos :), there was a clip of a guy shaking his finger at a snake. He said ''play dead'' and the snake rolled over and 'died'. I dont know if it is possible to actually teach snakes tricks, or if it was just because the snake in the clip was a hognose snake and playing dead is natural to it. I believe the latter but it was be awesome if you could teach snakes tricks. :crazy02:

No, its really not possible. That is one of the hognoses defences, they will roll over and play dead, its natural. If you keep your routine with the snake on a tight scheduale you can condition it to expect certain things at certain times or when you do something to let it know, but thats about it. Even with the snakes smart enough to learn tricks they definatly will choose not to, they dont have the domestic mindset that they're here to serve us like dogs or horses have.

It doesn't seem possible to teach snakes tricks. The basis of teaching any animal is to reward for good/favorable behavior. Just how are you supposed to reward a snake?!? I suppose you can cut up little pieces of pinky mice. But by the time the snake actually eats it(if it even eats), it probably forgot what it was being rewarded for.

There's one trick that all snakes seem to know - escape from the viv when no one's looking! ;)
