Hey, I just cleaned my snake Mushu's cage and got some new stuff. I need somebodys clearance of a healthy environment. It has a thermometer, hygrometer, cork log hide-away, stone water bowl, 75w light, undertank heater, molch bedding from pet store, an plastic plants. I would post pictures if I knew how. If anyone responds to this, please tell me how to post pictures and I will.:confused:

Hi
Welcome. I would take the heat lamp off if the under the tank heater is keeping things hot enough. It might get too hot with the lamp and pad. Also I would use paper towels or ASPEN bedding not pine. otherwise sounds good
For pictures just set up an account with www.photobucket.com and then you can paste the img link into your post.

Well first off you don't need the light the UTH (underground heater) is all that is needed, a hide on both sides warm and cool. I'm sorry what is "molch" bedding. Otherwises souds great.
As for pics you can scroll down when you post, you'll see manage attachments, usually hey must be resized first to 800x600 pixels.
hope this helps, susang

Ok thanks, but the undertank heater is only making things about 50 degrees, and it is very cold in my house

That doesn't seem right only 50 degrees usually they run hot up to about 90. Do you have it attached under the glass? Also that light is not good for your snake you should if you want to use one use red. It looks great but also really need hide on both sides. susang

Oh yeah, he hides in the plants sometimes. ( Sorry, I don't have the planted configured like I usually do.)

I dont see where you have the probe under the substrate?? if you are useing the little stick on for telling you temps.... I would suggest getting a temp with a probe.. the UTH should be a lot hotter than that on the glass. The little sticky thing is measureing the air temps at the top of the tank and not on the uth....

A regulat light as you have will make the snake think it is always day light. A red light they can't see the light, but they can see. It allows you to see the snake. I would definately check the UTH as it should be much hotter then 50. What kind of thermometer are you using?

What does UTH mean? Is the heating pad supossed to be under the glass or in the cage? I have a four paws stick on thermometer. I turn the light off at night, so I really don't understand???? The room my snake is in is usually 60 degrees but my snakes gage is always that temperature. His cage is usually between 50 and sixty, and my snake always feels cold.

Wouldn't it make sense to put a piece of red plastic wrap below the light if it was absaloutly necessary?

UTH under tank heater, sorry thermometer is not the best, you need probe type termometer and some way to regulate when you get proper temp. Most UTH actually run around 90 above heater under substrate. Yes heter goes under tank not inside.

Sorry if you're turning the light off at night and it is indeed 50 where the snake is that is very cold and the snake will likely not digest food properly.

Its not as hot as 90 degrees whern I stick my hand in there with the light not on. UHHH. I am s CONFUSED!!!!

Just one last thing to say about temps. For the snake, the ambient air tempterature doesn't matter so much (although 50 IS pretty darn low), as I'm sure you've picked up. You need to provide the snake a way to regulate it's own body temperature. Using an uth, you are simulating a warm spot (such as asphalt) on the ground. This spot should be between 85 and 90 degrees, although those temperatures vary, depending on who you ask. To make sure that temp is right you don't only need a good thermometer, as mentioned, you need a good thermostat, which you haven't mentioned you have. Without one, that hot spot, where your snake may hang out a lot, could be over 100 degrees! WAY too hot for the corn.

If everything else mentioned is going to be taken care of, your snake should be great!! I would worry a little about the low ambient air temp, but that you know too. Gorgeous corn by the way!!

Ok, I just did a temperature check with a stick thermometer, and it is about 87 degrees with light+ undertank heater.

okay, so the heat problem makes sense now? Sorry about that.

As Susan said, even though ambient air temperature is considered moderately unimmportant, your snake will not be digesting its meals easily (which can become a serious problem). You need to get those temps up, despite what we said earlier. A heat lamp could work, and a red one would be better. Don't worry the temp isn't going to hurt your snake, but don't let it stay that low for too long.

I think you should get a red heat lamp, a timer, and a thermostat. Hook your heat pad up to the thermostat so that the temperature on the glass won't go above 90 degrees. The heat lamp should then be hooked up to the timer so that it stays on for something like 14 hours a day (anyone know what's best for this number???). Try that and I think your snake should be comfortable, as long as you can keep the temperatures at the right levels. Good luck!!
