I'm Stephen from Southern Indiana. Can't say I just got into snakes, but hoarding them IS new for me.

Current Count is 28 Corns and 1 Hognose

I grew up catching black rat snakes and garter snakes while my dad mowed the grass. We had one rat snake that lived in our yard for more than eight years. He kept coming back larger each summer, of course, but shed in our basement every winter... At last Measure (fifteen years ago), Fred was no less than six feet. My dad is 6'2", and he could stand with Fred's face at eye level, and his tail (Fred's not my dad's) would drag the ground.

I just hatched my first and second ever clutches: Motley Anery A x Motley Sunglow and Snow x ?Normal/Okeetee/Hypo? I didn't know what I was doing, but I ended up with live babies. And not all of them are Normals!

Eh, I guess that's all for now. Most of my snakes come from Reptilian Projects. Troy's a good guy, if you're interested in any type of reptile.

welcome.........this is a good place to hang out as everyone is friendly. post some pics of your snakes. :)

Business Plan,

I'm working on a business plan for my Cornsnake projects.

And I'm curious about some information,

What is the "new" Scientific name for cornsnakes? I know that Elaphe guttata guttata isn't exactly correct anymore.

Also, where do you keep your snakes? In your house? In your bedroom? In a temp-controlled garage? Let me know as I live in a 1 bedroom house, and I'm trying to find places to put 30 snakes.

I have Melamine racks, but am thinking about buying pvc racks from Jason's Jungle. It's more than time to get rid of my 10 gal aquariums, eh?

Do you (breeders) out there do more local business or do you tend to ship?

Are people often willing to pay $XX.XX for shipping, or do you find that you hsve to finght for shipping costs?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but this is a starter for now.

Stephen,

i house my snakes in one of the bedrooms of my duplex. I have about 30 snakes( a variety of colubrids), 9 of which I keep in 20L aquariums that are on large book shelves and the others are housed in 4 PVC racks by Jasons jungles. The racks are great as a space saver as well as dependability and Jason is great to deal with. But when Planning costs to prepare for such things, make sure you plan in to buy a good thermostat because the racks should not be run without them. They get way to warm for the animals if its not controlled. I buy the highend thermostats ( 150-200 each) for the racks but I know there are cheaper options. I just like the dependabilty of the Herpstats.

You also need to plan where you will brumate them if you plan to breed. I have bought extra racks that remain empty most of the time. I use the extra racks for quarentining new snakes ( very important to keep new snakes away from your others till you know its healthy) and I will also use them in the garage for the snakes I plan to brumate this year.

It seems most breeders ship out to customers more than local. Anyone who buys from the internet should expect to pay for overnight safely packed shipping and that varies between 40and 50 dollars generally. If anyone hassels about paying shipping they are not a good customer IMHO.
