My boyfriend and I have talked about getting a snake on and off for a while now. We were out today looking and between a ball python and a corn we decided to get corn snakes. We think we should each get one of our own. I found this forum today and have been captivated for over an hour now. I have so many questions because I want to learn all I can beforehand. I know to at least start I am going to get the corn snake manual I hear recommended over and over.
Now for the first of I am SURE millions of questions to come. After reading over and over that you all don't recommend putting them together, I wonder if we could get a 20 gallon tank and devide it for the babies and when ready for a bigger tank get the second 20?
Second. We missed a rep show and would not have been anywhere knowledgeable enough anyway......I did find a nice pet store that is just reptiles and amphibs....called scales and tails..lol. They had babies like candycanes and norms for between 24.99 to 34.99 and up. Does that sound fair? They were super nice and all of the information they gave us you all verified online. I would so appreciate any info you all can share. I would say that we will be starting to look to buy in a couple of months, when we know as much as we can.
Thanks again.

Hi, welcome to the forum:) Yes you can divide the tank and house them both in there for now. Getting the Corn Snake Manual will answer most if not all of your questions and is a must have. As far as prices go it sounds fair but someone that is from your area can best answer that one. Prices can vary depending on where you live. It sounds like you are off to a great start getting informed. Good luck.

welcome

welcome, and I agree with Alicia. I have a pair that are housed together in a 55 gallon tank. Of course before spring they will be seperated because the female is too small to breed. Although if you got 2 females I couldn't see where it would be that bad to house them together. But that is up to you. Pet shops can be good and bad for buying snakes. I know Serpwidgets is in Colorado and may have some hatchling still available. You can check out his web page. Let me tell you the man knows his snakes! You can do a members search and find his name and link to his webpage. And of course I have to plug Rich Z's site and his snakes at serpenco.com. he is the super nice man who lets us all use this great site (never hurts to suck up;) ) anyway welcome again and I hope you find the perfect snakes and all the info you need!!

I personally would not keep two snakes together even though there are glass there to separate them.
Just in case that the two snakes do somehow (you know how they are they are just so good at escaping...) get to the other side and started to feel hungry....
this might happen...

I would just like to commend you for the patience and effort to educate yourselves before you get a snake. It's always nice to meet people who truly care about their animals' welfare, and it will make things a lot easier for you and your snake in the long run. These forums are a great place to start, as is the manual, and you may also want to check out the corn forum at kingsnake.com.

thanx

I appreciate all the advice and help. I bought the book today and am at lease 1/4 through it already. Very informative. A friend is giving us a 29 gallon tank. I think I will still try to come up with a VERY safe and secure way to devide it. I am still planning on about 1 1/2 - 2 months befor we purchase. I would still welcome any advice for the "newbie". This seems to be addictive and I barely started..LOL

Welcome!

Sounds like you guys are off to a great start. The prices you mentioned are a lot more reasonable than the pet stores in my area, which run about twice that! Snakes are fun, fascinating, and yes, addictive. I love corn snakes becuz they're sweet, quite acitve, and so beautiful! Have fun choosing yours :)
