king snakes and musk?!?!?!?!?!

Its a defense mechanism, where they evacuate the contents of their scent glands (and for some their bowels) in an effort to scare a potential threat away. Most of them with handling grow out of it no problem once they learn your not going to eat them.
 
A lot depends on the snake too, some wont at all, and some are little musk bombs ready to go off at any time.
 
They usually musk right when you pick up, so if your picking one out in person, find the one that looks healthy and doesnt squirt you.
