Thanks Tom. Every year is better than the next. I am really excited about next year! Got some really cool stuff coming up that will be breeding....years in the making that as far as I know have never been produced. We'll see.

Why not ultra lavs?

I'm assuming you did the most obvious cross, Opal X Ultramel?

That would give you ultramels het lavender and amels het lavender.

Breeding the ultramels het lavender to each other will give you a 1/16 chance for an ultra lav and 1/8 chance for the ultramel lavs.

You did cross an ultramel with an opal for the hets, right? :)

The original cross was an Opal with an Ultra and I got 100% Ultramels het Lavender. So correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that breeding an Ultramel X Ultramel won't produce any Ultras, only ultramels and normals.

I will be breeding the Ultramels het Lavender to Opals next season.
 
The corn snake morph book says ultramel x ultramel = 25% Amel, 50% Ultramel and 25% Ultras --- so hopefully murphy will be with you & you'll get some.

As stated, Ultramel x Ultramel does give you ultras, as well as ultramels and amels.

A breeding of ultramel het lavender x Opal will not produce any ultra lavenders, clearly, but will increase the chances of an ultramel lavender substantially.
 
Thats what made sense to me, but I checked out the corn calculator on the Kornatter site and it showed different. I guess there is a glitch, at least that is what I hope because my intention from the beginning was to produce Ultra Lavs and the Ultramel Lavs would just be a bonus....a big one at that. I thought everyone was using this. Maybe it is known that the Ultramel cross doesn't calculate correctly. I noticed this a while back but didn't say anything.

Either way, that website is absolutely incorrect.

It says: Ultramel x Ultramel =

1/2 Ultramel
3/8 Normal 50% poss.het. Ultra OR Amelanistic
1/8 Ultramel

No normals can be produced from this cross.

ua x ua = uu, ua, aa

u a
u uu ua
a ua aa

aa= amel
ua= ultramel
uu= ultra

25% ultra, 50% ultramel, 25% amel.

Probably just a little slip up, but it is incorrect.

Not sure how many adult ultramels het lavender you held back, but if you kept back a few pairs or something it would probably be worth it to take a pair and mate them together just in hopes of getting ultra lavs instead of pairing them all up with opals.
 
I think I kept back a 2.3 or 3.4 so I will definately be breeding at least one or two pair together, but most likely not until 07. I have one female that I am trying to get up to size but won't put them together if she just isnt there come breeding season. The male on the other hand should be plenty big for some Opal females for next season.
