Hi guys!

So, I have a corn snake and a CA king, and I am going to be adopting a Ball python on Sunday.

For both the CA and the corn I am using a Fluker's dimmer blue light (70W bulb) and I have an undertank heat pad for each.

The max temp that I can get the floor to be is 83. For some reason, I cannot (with the two heating devices combined) get the temperature any higher. This has not been a problem for the CA or the corn. 83 is a good hot-spot temp for them, and they are thriving, happy little guys. I have a closed in hide over both the heat pads that they go to if they get too cool.

However, I know the ball will need around 90 for a hot spot. What kind of lighting/heat pad should I get? The Flukers light and the heat pads I have now just do not reach that high of a temperature.

Can anyone recommend anything different? Something they sell at Petsmart, if possible.
 
Maybe I need a dimmer that can support a higher watt bulb?

I don't understand why the heat pads are not getting warmer. Like I said, it's fine for the snakes I have now... but I am concerned it will just not be warm enough for the ball.
 
The heat pad easily gets up to 105 without a regulator on it, are you sure youre taking the temp in the proper location? I know this for a fact that they get that hot ( i had a glass tank heat fracture and explode on me once hah) Where are you taking the temp from? you need to take the temp from under the bedding or other substrates.
 
Where do you have the temp probe located? It should be under the bedding, right above the center of the heat mat. If Heat mats are not on a thermostat/dimmer they can reach temperatures of over 100F, but the probe won't pick it up unless it is directly on the glass above the heat mat. Chances are, your temps are much much higher than you realize (if so, turn off the mats until you can get a temperature control, temps over 90F can burn your snake severely).
 
I will definitely triple check with the probe I have.

The one heat pad I have was very used when I bought it along with the tank. I had to scotch tape the sides to the tank because the adhesive was completely shot. I don't know if it's just old and not working like it should.

ahh that might be your problem. If your heat pad has been pulled off a previous tank the internal parts could be broken from the tension of pulling it on and off. I would def get a new heat pad if that one turns out to not be giving the proper heat that it should at full power.

Okay, it looks like the old one (unusually enough) is now capping out around 91, and the newer one is around 88.
 
Maybe when I checked before I wasn't dead center. Hm.

Well, that's good news for me. At least now I know 90 is doable.
 
yay! thats good news :) sometimes probes are silly...i have one that i have to press reset everytime i want to know the real temp :p
