So, I'm "that" guy I currently have books on top of my lid. It hasn't been a problem because I unfortunately don't have a lot of space but I'm going to be movie and I will have more space so i want to get some to secure the lid. Its a lid that sits over the top of the tank does not slide.

I bought a new tank that had those lid clips...lost my patience trying to get them to work lol...so I went and bought supplies to make the tank straps I like and thought I would share what exactly I use:

I use THESE. I have a viv with a hinged top so I use 4 to secure the back side and 2 in the front to secure the side I open. Be very careful if you are using things to weigh down as those can shift. Snakes are amazing at getting out so whatever you use, make sure you check that it is secure. Also, one tip I have is that when I have the viv open, I place the clips on the the hinged back lid so if I cannot close it without moving them. I have never, ever had an instance where I forgot to lock it and when other people in my family change Jag's water, I teach them to do the same thing and I have a sign hanging above her viv as a reminder to check that it is always safe and secure!
