making corn lovers

lost cause
My niece is a kindergarden teacher, and she asked me wether I would mind/like to visit her class to show the kids my snakes. They had discussed it in class, and every one of them assured her they wouldn't be afraid to touch one. According to her, that statement was accompanied by a facial expression that said the exact opposite :D.
So we were going to try that out (with escape possibilities for those that would indeed be afraid, no need to scare them to death :) ). I chose the two most docile corns I have, and went on my way.

And she was dead wrong! There were two that didn't want to touch, but did lean in close to be sure not to miss anything. And one of the two changed her mind afterwards.
the rest of them loved it!

Indeed. I do think that the normal might be a hypo, but I've never tested him, so I call him a normal to be safe.

aww that's great :) my friend Clint does snake shows for kids & I love watching them go from 'No way' to 'ok I'll touch the body' to 'can I hold it?' LOL :)

Well this is my first time, but that was exactly how it went with the one refusal that changed her mind :)
The others were one step further and skipped the 'no way'. Especially after the first one actually held a snake, they were like 'hey! I want to do that too!!' :D
One was a little overenthousiastic. If I didn't keep an eye on him, he really started to squeeze. Fortunately he let go when I told him too (backed up by an angry look from the teacher lol).

I love it! I'll be taking Wadjet and possibly one of the frogs (Probably Tiana-she seems to be the one that hides from people the least) in to the preschool group at my DD's homeschool co-op for part of our animals unit this Spring. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll also add-I have this book http://www.amazon.com/Awesome-Snake...&qid=1359426393&sr=8-1&keywords=Snake+Science

It's officially designed for 4th grade and up, but a lot of the activities could be modified for younger students (I had mostly 1st-3rd for the Snake co-op I did for the homeschoolers). The activities don't actually require a real snake-but are great to use along with meeting one. We're planning another Snake-themed co-op class next month, to celebrate the start of the "Year of the Snake".

I do reptile and exotic animal presentations for schools probably about 12-20 times a year. I absolutely LOVE it, its my FAVORITE thing to do in the entire world. I love watching their little faces light up! We've even done birthday parties, churches, home school groups, and scout troups. Its SOOO much fun. We always end with all the kids sitting on the floor and my big 16' friendly burm stretched out in their laps ( carefully monitored of course lol). The corns/kings are always a big hit too because they have such striking patterns and colors and are "kid sized".

Looks like everyone had a blast :D Good for you!

I would love to be able to do this! It looks like so much fun!

If the classroom thing never comes up as a possibility, you can do it on a smaller scale as well. I had some nice success the first time I brought a snake to a car show.

Contact Montana's teacher. I have had great luck talking to the girls teachers even if it is just a show and tell thing the kids love it.

That is a really good idea. Her school is pretty strict, so they might have rules against live animals, but I'll have to look into it.

I'd also suggest contacting local homeschool groups-normally they have message boards online similar to this one that you can find from a Google search-it's very likely that they have a group of kids who would be GLAD to have a snake visit at a regular co-op or other event. They might even pay you ;). I'd be thrilled to have someone bring snakes to our group, and I couldn't find someone local for Alli's birthday party a few months back (I thought I had someone who was going to bring a RTB, but that fell through).

Oh, that's also a good idea. Off to Google!

You've been able to give those kids a positive experience they will likely never forget and that is reward enough. Glad you were able to get a few pictures. I see your in Belgium? I used to live in Brussels, Belgium myself. Beautiful country.

Actually, in general i'm not really a kid person. But even then it was fun seeing their excitement. They did love it :)
Thanks for the compliment!

It's great that you're doing this! I fell in love with snakes as a child on a camping trip, where someone let me hold their six footer! Of course, it took a while to not be afraid of small snakes. Strangely enough, I used to be able to snuggle all day with my Uncle's Retic but cringed at a hognose.

I know someone who really likes snakes, but is terrified of spiders (except for tarantulas)... Their reasoning is that you can at least see a snake when it comes near you....LOL...

I was exactly the same!!! there actually has been a moment when, as I returned home from work, I didn't dare to enter my house, because a spider was sitting in the hallway!! :D
It has taken lots of work to get that phobia to an acceptable level! i never ever want to call my neighbours again for something like that!!!
