Mites and Wood

My red tail has a small amount of mites, maybe 3 per foot, and he is in a wooden cage. any tips on how to go about getting rid of them, other than bombing everything with mite spray? like how will the mite stuff do in the wooden cage?

Do a search for the Nix Mite Treatment. If it has 3 per foot you probably have 10 or 12 thousand eggs in the cage and in the carpet under the cage. You need to bomb the world or you won't get rid of them.

I would also Vaseline around every opening/vent on the viv to stop them travelling back and fore..
I generally use Provent a mite spray.... It lasts up to six weeks, so way past the life cycle of mites.......

So, the mite treatment wont hurt the snake by soaking into the wood? I don't want him to get sick because of all the chemicals...

Wasn't the viv sealed?
I know Provent a mite (when used correctly) stays on the surface of the Rub for 6 weeks with no ill effects.....

No its not sealed. Its probably going to soak in and stay for more than six weeks isn't it? But if its not harmful then wouldn't that actually help keep the mites away?

Where do mites come from? If I have a current setup with no mites, will they appear one day? Or do I need to introduce them somehow? What are the more common ways of introducing mites?

Any inverts that walk on the treated surface will die....
So it's a good way to stop the mite cycle....
Mites do not breed until the last stage of development....

They need to be introduced....
Taking snakes outside can cause the risk... New snakes from anywhere can also cause them...
Bedding or viv furniture from a contaminated source can cause them....
etc...
Bedding can be microwaved or frozen to stop the risk....

I know a guy who thinks he brought mite home for the pet store on his clothing. I was the only thing he could think of.

If you are careful and don't bring new snakes home you may never get mites.

I work in the entomology department at my university, and we've found lots of different species of mites in various soil samples. Long explanation short, spending any time outside in the woods can lead to mites, as they are able to live away from a host for some time. This is how I believe we got ours, since I sit my boots next to his tank. Annoyances.

Well, we've treated snakie boy with the nix solution and he is currently sitting in a giant rubbermaid with a cloud of dead mites around him, so its safe to say its working pretty well ^_^
