Mites....

So I have a few snakes that like to eat on their own. I leave the FT mouse in with them on a napkin and they eat. One did not eat and when I picked the mouse up I noticed a few mites on the mouse and napkin some white and some red (filled with blood) so I did what any breeder would do I flipped out and looked at every snakes in the rack with a magnifying glass and noticed no mites. I then put 6 of the 12 in water and noticed no mites, not even wood lice. Anyone ever have hear of these dead mouse eating mites?

did you kill the mouse or was it a frozen thawed mouse? I know mice can get mites so maybe if it was fresh killed mouse the mites are actually from it.

hmm considering the mouse was F/T, I would think that being in the freezer, the mites would die (assuming the mouse is where the mites came from). Were the mites moving around? Maybe de-thawing the mouse de-thawed the mites as well, but the mites were still dead. If the mites were alive, then I have no idea.

Just my guess, probably not the best, but that's all I can think of.

I was always under the impression that freezing destroyed the cell structure and that mites could not survive this.
When I have fecals done on my snakes they often come back with dead mites in their system. I asked my vet about this and he stated that the mites on the F/T mice that were frozen died and posed no threats.

I have asked around and most people never heard of these mites. A vet friend of mine said they could be coming from the bedding and that if they are eating dead then they are no worry. As they are not on any of the snakes im not sweating it. I will just feed outside of the cages from now on.
