Mouse bit me - think I'm infected!!!

I went to petsmart this afternoon and bought a mouse. While I was holding him at the store he bit me on the finger tip. No big deal. It happens. BUT 1/2 hour later (by the time I got home) my fingertip was tingling, swollen, hard and HURTS (typing is not much fun right now) I went to a closer petsmart and they said that this reaction is normal.

Is it? Any one else have this type of reaction? Will I die? I didn't keep him, but I unfortunately have to keep my finger...

Thanks for any input or comments.

Wow. I've been bitten. It hurt, got swollen, and a little itchy. But after 24 hours it was fine. But I'd say put some Ice on it for the first while to take down the swelling. Also try taking Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) If your really worried. go to the hospital.

I can't say I have ever had that reaction from a mouse bite but I have had similar from a cat bite. I would just make sure you clean the area well with something like Betadine, put a little Neosporin on it with a bandage and it should be fine. Let us know how it goes.

I've only been bit once a couple months ago. During cage cleaning time, one of my males charged across the cage and chomped me a good one. Don't know what his problem was that day, because he hasn't done it since. Your symptoms do sound similar to mine. Just watch it, and hopefully it'll feel much better tomorrow.

LOL... guess we were all typing at the same time. Of course I'm slowest... and hit submit right after Traci. Guess I wouldn't know what to do if it was any other way!

I've never been bitten by my mice enough to bleed, but I have been bitten by my rats. When I first got them they didn't know me and weren't very friendly, and stupid me  just had to go sticking my fingers in their cage anyway. I got some pretty nasty bites and every single one of them swelled up, hurt like heck, and bled a lot. I think its because their teeth are so sharp and do go suprisingly deep. I would just keep it clean and watch how it develops and if you really think its infected then go with your gut and go to the doctor, but I'm sure it will be fine.

Thank you

Thanks for all the advice and anecdotes. I feel a WHOLE lot better knowing that this does happen and will probably get better soon.

This is definitely one of the great things about this forum!

from the skin care guide

It’s very important to carefully clean a wound. Proper cleaning removes any foreign material, reduces the risk of secondary infection and minimizes any potential scarring.

To clean the wound:

* Rinse the wound with clear water. Running tap water can be used.
* Remove any foreign material in the wound (such as dirt, gravel or glass) by using tweezers if necessary.
* Ideally, clean the wound with a sterile gauze.
* Avoid using cotton wool.
* If the bleeding restarts, apply firm pressure.
* Most first aid kits include sterile or antiseptic wipes which can be used to clean the wound.

And it goes without saying this is critical while handling and caring for our particular pets- not good to be working around fecal matter or vomitous with any kind of uncovered lesion, and there's always a possiblity of contaminating the snakes' enclosure as well.

All the above advice is good, but the mouse that bit you is a Oklahoma mouse. That means you will turn into the Sooner Mouse and the Texas Rat Horns will come a callin. Seriously -- Make sure you keep it clean and if the redness if you have any gets any bigger see a Doctor asap.

What he said! Really, you should keep an eye on it. Watch for more swelling, aching, a red line (blood poisoning), fever, etc... Believe it or not folks, a bite from a mouse, like a scratch from a cat, can get serious. Really. But its probably okay, so just be aware of the wound's condition.
Hugs!

omg.. i think you have a fatal case of....~Paranoia" if not properly taken care of you WILL die within SEVEN days of reading this post. :sidestep:

Ha Ha. Not paranoia, just caution. Haven't you ever heard of rat-bite fever and cat-scratch fever? These are caused by nasty bacillus., and it happens. I don't think I've ever gotten sick from a bite or scratch, however the possibility exists, and can actually be fatal. It is only being responsible to suggest to someone to keep an eye on a wound, not paranoid.
