My first Herp meeting

I went to the Jacksonville Herpetology meeting. Wow, it was fantastic! They had some sort of large black monitor there that is one of 8 in the USA. There was a large turtle walking around the room. So cool. What I wanted to do was thank every single person and the owners of this forum for the knowledge all of you have so generously shared. I have learned so many basic things that I would not have known if it were not for all of you. There was a little guy there age 11 walking around with what looked like a very dark Okeetee. It looked very blue to me so I asked the child if his snake was in shed. He said it was. I have never seen one in blue but, thanks to a all of you, I had a clue. I wanted to tell his Grandmother about this web site so they could get more information on how to care for there snake but my children were running amok and I had to rein them in. I got back to the Grandmother just in time to hear that the snake had been fed on Friday, and it had just regurged his mouse on the kid's lap. There was a very experienced corn snake Man there who was explaining to the Grandmother how to better care for the poor puking blue snake. So I thank every here for helping us to learn to better care for our snakes. I bought my frozen pinkies for my little snakes.
Should I cut the pinkies in half for their first meal? Also, I have the thermostat set to 85F and the buried probe in the second bin is confirming what the first bin is reading. The reading is around 84F. Is this a good temp to feed at?

Glad to hear you had a fun Herp experience. Can't speak for everyone here, but I'll throw a thank you right back at your for taking the time and willingness to learn from the resources available.

I can't help much with the feeding questions, since I don't know the exact size of your snakes or the pinkies. Actual feeding temperature shouldn't matter much as long as their feeding container isn't freezing. Hopefully they wont be in them long and they'll be back on the warm side of them familiar homes before they know it.

I use an unheated feeding tub, but generally handle my little one for a bit to warm her up before feeding, so the cooler temp in the feeding tub isn't an issue. I put the feed tub directly back in her viv without a lid and let her crawl out at leisure and back to whatever amount of warmth she needs.

As long as the pinkies aren't too big, there should be no issue feeding a whole one even to a relatively young snake - good rule of thumb is not to feed anything bigger around than 1.5x the size of your snake at its thickest point.
