I've wanted some ferrets for a while now. Well I surfed Craigslist, emailed about 6 people, and non of them emailed back. Don't you hate when people don't email back? Yesterday I found a good looking ad for 2 ferrets that was posted earlier in the day. I texted the people, and they texted me back right away. Well, she said she had other people coming out to see them the next day, but if I came out that night I could see them, and if they liked me and I liked them, I could adopt them.
Upon looking up her address, I discovered it was a 2.5 hour drive. It was already 6:30 pm, but I really wanted these little guys. They were under a year old, friendly with people and other animals, fixed, descented, litter box trained, have had their shots, and came with their cage and all their toys. $100 for them and all their stuff. I convinced my mom to drive me and my sister all the way up to their house.
The people were awesome. Real animal lovers. They used to have over 300 animals, from chinchillas to birds to snakes to alligators. They were fostering the ferrets, and we talked for over an hour.
We got home around 1:30 am, I set up their cage, and I played with them for a while before letting them go to sleep. I named one Gwin, and my sister named the other Zeke. They're the most adorable little animals ever.
That was a lot of typing, and a lot of reading for you, but I have a story I want to share. So read on!
Story time!
Today after dinner we let my new little ferrets out to run around for a little bit and play. We closed off the family room, and I chased them around for about 45 minutes playing with them. I sat down for 2 minutes, thinking it wouldn't be a problem; the room was closed off and it's not like they were going to hurt themselves. Zeke layed down on the floor by the babygate which our dog, Lily, was behind, and they sniffed each other. I think Zeke even fell asleep for a little bit laying there. Lily is a really good dog, and she wouldn't hurt them purposely, but when she plays, she plays ROUGH, and I didn't want her pouncing on one the ferrets and breaking them. Gwin got really quiet, and I looked around to see where he was. He was right next to the air vent on the floor. He had lifted the wooden grate covering the hole and was looking at me, daring me to try and stop him from exploring this brand new fun filled tunnel. I started walking toward him slowly, knowing if I went fast he would bolt down the hole wanting me to chase him. I got about 2 feet away, and down he went. Dumb ferret. I kept him close to the opening for about 2 minutes by talking to him, but he was too far down for me to grab him. He got bored with me and disappeared into the hole. My dad and I took apart the ducts in the basement, while my mom and sister watched the 3 holes upstairs. It took about 20 minutes but we did get him out, safe and sound. His punishment: bath time. I have to screw those things down tonight. Ughhh that sounds like work.
Anyway, here are some pictures of the little buggers! They are so cute, but I'm sure you can see that for yourself.
Their nice big cage that they came with.
Cutie patootie.
Too lazy to stand and eat at the same time.
Play time.
They move soo much it's hard to get a good picture.
Saying hi to Lily.
And here is the hole Gwin escaped into. Don't mind all the dirt on the floor, we don't wipe our shoes.
Thanks for looking, and if you read that whole big long post, congratulations! You have more patience then a lot of people! :wavey:
