my room is getting too hot

thanks to the crazy canadian weather my room sits at about 83-86 degrees with the AC on. i turned the heating pad off but i'm just worried that my corns isn;t going to be able to cool down if he needs too since the whole tank is above 80 degrees. what should i do, this isn't my house so i can just crank up the AC. an option might be to move the tank downstairs so it;s a little cooler but other than that do i have any alternatives?

Fans. cool water in the bowl....um other then those i wouldn't know. i live in canada to. But i live up north. So not all of canandas weather is the same lol

thats why its so crazy, at any give time of the year u can get temps ranging from -40 to 30 degrees celcius.
what do people that live in a warmer climate do with their corns?

Its been in the upper 80's to 90's here :flames: I just keep my fan going (with AC because my room is on the sunny side of the house) and turn down the rheostat a little if i have to. If you have a little plug in fan you could use that to cool it down a little and make sure there is a water dish so your snake can fully submerse.

well we could certainly do with some of that HEAT in the uk and you can have our rain in exchange lol.

I agree, you should get a fan going that will cool the viv down

isobel :)

Well, I'm not an expert by any means, but I do live where it's hot. I don't have any heating on for mine at the moment, but I really wouldn't worry too much if the tank were at 83-86 F for a short time. If you are worried about it, add some water dishes and place a fan near them. I would watch it, though. Increased evaporation will cool down the temps pretty quickly. Here, people cool their houses via evaporative cooling, and you can achieve up to 20 degrees (F) cooler than outside temps.

As long as you're in the low 80s you should be okay.

As far as fans go, personally, I've never witnessed a fan do diddley squat to lower temps for me. Unless it's pulling in cooler air from another room or outdoors, it's just circulating warm, stale air. In all the time I ran a fan, I never witnessed it lower the temps, but I still left it on for peace of mind

If you've got access to a basement, they tend to be cooler. Like you mentioned, the downstairs may be cooler. If it gets extremely hot for a short period, you can do the swamp cooler thing where you have a fan blowing across ice to create cool air, but I wouldn't bother with doing that 24/7.

Hopefully, that helps out a bit.

Whoa! What're you going for there, sublimation? ;)

Swamp coolers just use tap-temperature water, no ice. LOL. I wonder, though, which would be more effective at cooling. I might have to try it out today while I'm taking a break from schoolwork . . .

I've never personally tried it. I know I've read (on this forum, I believe) about using ice and it being referred to as a 'swamp cooler'. Probably just a terminology thing. But, I imagine ice would be more effective for cooling :shrugs: I suppose it depends how much you need to lower the temp.

Does it cool down during the night? I'm in Florida and I'm not using external heat as there is plenty coming through the open window :D. With the window open and the air vent cracked I average mid 80's during the day and mid 70's at night. I see no difference in behavior with a constant temp in the above ranges, and all seem just fine. I think those with snake rooms regulate the room temp as opposed to individual vivs/containers as well. If you start getting into the 90's then I'd take action and buy one of those portable room A/C's or swamp coolers like this one :D http://www.air-n-water.com/product/AF-330.html

it does get a bit cooler at night, about 5 degrees or so. i have noticed that he moves around the tank quite a bit more at nite than he did in the past. it might just be that he;s starting to get used to his home now. i've had him for about 3 months now.

CaptBogart-so u don;t have 2 different temps in the tank but just different temp during the day/night?

Correct, the BP is the only one with a temp gradient as they like to bask in an even higher heat, but the colubrids and I prefer the same temps so it's a win/win situation, :grin01:. When it gets even hotter here, I'll reverse the process by opening the air vent more and just cracking the window to maintain my temps.

I know water holds a temp some degrees cooler than the ambient air. How many degrees cooler I don't know, but your snake will. If it's not hanging out in the water dish you're probably okay. I notice during heat waves here, my snakes will hang out around the water dish, or in the cages with dog dishes they will hang out under. The only time I have been worried was a week straight of 95+ temps and several snakes took to hanging out IN the water dishes. That's when I broke out the ice and fans.
