I am joining this for my son, Cade, new owner to a baby red albino corn snake. We are so excited.. If anyone has any advice of thoughts for us we would love the help. 1st reptile we have ever owned. I am scared how I am gonna feed it baby mice. i cry when i see a squirrel dead on the road. Anyone else have trouble with this???
Also any ideas on names for a red albino???

First off, congrats to your son, AND YOU. I'm sure you will end up loving the corn just as much as your son.

The feeding issue seems to me the most common with first time owners. I wanted a snake for years, but the gruesome thought of a snake downing a poor little mouse was just terrifying to me, too. But, it's not as bad as we think it is. There's no blood, and guts, there's no gore... unless the mousey poo gets squeezed out. If you feed your little guy Frozen & Thawed mice, it's a lot easier on YOU, and much better for your corn.

handling

how often or much can we hold the snake. we want to love him and hold him and he seems okay with it? what about his body temp? is ours warm enough if were holding him??

When you first get a hatchling you should let it settle in it new home for 3-6 days no handling, to help reduce stress. If you already handle don't frets just limit you time to 5 minunite a day then slow build up from there. After about four day you could try to feed it in a separate vented container or delli cup that you might of gotten it in. and don't handle4 for 48 hours after feeding.
Snake should feel cold to you. Human being warm blooded and all.

Here a few links that should answer any other ????

Good Luck.

yeah when I got my son our first snake I was buying live pinkies and the guy in the pet store was putting them in bags sealed shut and told me to to put the bag in the freezer and they will be fine--well fine and dead :grin01:
so if that wasnt bad enough as i stood outside the freezer afraid to open it..when feeding time came now i had to defrost the lil thing and feed it to the snake..I say that was a year ago and now buying frozen mice from rodent -pro thawing and feeding like a pro ..even my son likes to jiggle the mice over the snake.its truly facinating to watch them eat . my friends and family think im nuts but as savvy says no blood no guts no bones cracking...I also feed both the snakes in a seperate container..give them 2-3 days to digest and hold them often..welcome aboard and enjoy your new lil friend..post some pictures for us too see
