Need help getting rid of mites

Alright i got mites and i got them bad i think. How do i get rid of them, i have heard of using rid ex (of course diluting it) and i know there are products out there that say are for mites. but they say not to spray on head or eyes.

I am going to tonight take out the aspen and clean the cage well with a diluted amount of bleach, and put paper towls in for now. \

I am worried about my guy because it looks like he has one below his eye, he has a black spot on one side and not the other, also under his mouth horizontal to his body he has a black line reaching about his lenght of his mouth, also under his head he has 4 or five black lines perpendicular to his body, seems like under his scales, i have never seen these black lines before and are afraid they are mites around his scales, he is albino by the way. i tried to take pictures of it last night but hard to since he is small, camera wont focus and hard to take a pic under his mouth, he got pissed off trying to manuver him for the pic he bite me for the first time.

Any good and safe way to get rid of these damn blood suckers

There are a ton of ways to eradicate them, some safer than others. If you do a search on the word "mites", you'll find many, many threads with opinions and suggestions.

If I had only a snake or two, I'd be inclined to do what I did when I had an infestation many years ago. I was cohabbing three hatchlings that I had hatched myself, and stupidly brought another one home from the pet store of about the same size, and threw him in with them in their 10gal tank. Soon I had four hatchlings crawling with mites. I prepared four small tupperware containers, one for each snake, with paper towel substrate. I then filled a basin with lukewarm-to-cool water with a little bit of soap in the water. The soap helps improve the surface tension of the water and helps in drowning the mites that are really embedded on the snake. Then I held each hatchling under the water, with just their head poking out. Every 45 seconds or so I dunked the head too for a few seconds. After all the mites were off, I'd place the snake in the container I had prepared. Every day I'd thoroughly clean the tupperware containers, do the bathing routine if necessary, and return the snakes to their containers.

I scrubbed their tank with a slightly stronger bleach solution than I would normally use for routine cleaning. Then I'd leave it full of the solution for hours, then empty it and let it completely dry. I did this at least three times. After the final cleaning, I rinsed the heck out of the tank over and over until I couldn't smell bleach anymore.

Only after I was sure that the snakes were mite-free did I re-introduce them to the tank. It seemed to work-- I haven't seen a mite since. I think this is the SAFEST method, but there may be quicker methods.

Good luck!

The product is called BK2. It is a resurgence of a product from several years ago called Black Knight. It is BY FAR the most effective and safe commercial product of it's kind. If you decide to go with it, just read the directions carefully. I won't tell you that it's safe to spray directly on your animals, and I would tell you not to if you asked me.....but that said, I will also tell you, from my experience it is even safer than the label on the can indicates.

I might add......if you only have a few animals, try soaking them in diluted betadine (iodine solution). Make a mixture that resembles weak ice tea. While the animals are soaking clean their enclosures with very diluted bleach (a cap full of bleach/gallon of water. Remove all cage furniture and wash in the dishwasher on hot. Replace the bedding with paper towel (you can see the mites if they return better than with aspen or newspaper). Don't return the animals until the bleach smell is completely gone. Rinse and Repeat as needed. If you decide to go with the bk2, feel free to give me call, I can walk you through using it.....

Thanks guys for your help, espically chris, it was bad so i couldnt wait for the bk2, i went with the nix treatmeant. i think it went good, all of the mites from under his mouth are gone, he still has some around his eye, hopefully we can get rid of them in the next treatment or two. quite a few came off of him when we first spayed him in his container. hopefully ill be mite free in the next week or so. now hes hiding under the paper towles.

Since he has them still around his eye, he seems to be quite frankly, gone crazy. Hes in his tree trashing about, looks like he is trying to get them out from around his eye. Is there anything i can do to help him get them out, or just wait it out untill they fall out. Can they still be alive or are they dead and stuck there.

I think they are probably dead. The Nix kills them on contact. Try dunking him in water like Roy said with a little soap. That may loosen they up.

Don't forget to CLEAN everthing everwhere or you will have them right back again. Need to clean again in about a week and again in about a week.

hmm everyone is talking about the nix treatment and being good but i try to search for this product but i can not find it anywhere. can someone give me a link to that product please

pest strips for mites...

My sister had used pest strips from the hardware store. The ones for attics and basements and that seemed to do the job just great.
