Need Help with Heat!!

Ok, I put off moving my snakes to my rack until I got back from vacation so I could watch them. And now it is driving my to swearing and tears. I really don't understand what it is doing!

I have an animal plastics 66qt rack with the heat cord, and I have a rancho single probe thermostat. I first stuck it in the pre drilled place for it--but it was too far away from the cord and the cord got up to 100 degrees, I stuck the probe on the cord and set it at 90, and in the tub where the probe was said 84 degrees. BUT the tub in the shelve below the temps were in the 90's, the one below that in the 100's and the one below that in the 70's. I have five thermomiters each giving me a WILDLY different temp!

I switched it around and got all the temps under 90 degrees, but there is still one that says 76 degrees. I swapped the tub with the one that had the highest temp, and it still says 76 degrees. I tested the thermometer on the heat strip and it measured accurately, so I don't think it is broken.

Now I thought the top bin would have the highest temp and the bottom one the lowest--why is it that just one of mine is always colder no matter where it is?

Also, how much temp variation ought I normally to expect between the top tub and the bottom?

That is a helpful thread! I'm just struggling with the one colder tub. Also, it seems like 78degrees is too cold for the hot side of a corn's home? I'm not sure?

A friend of mine heats his building to 76-80 with no extra heat on his racks with no problems. I also have one corn that if the temp hits 80 while he is digesting he regurges so he sits at the bottom of the rack at 75/76 on the hot spot.

My advice to you would be too purchase another thermostat. I know yours is not broken but you might want to look at a Helix DBS 1000 or a Herpstat. These are proportional thermostats that work better than the "On Off" type models. They actually make the heat tape hotter or colder depending on the different temperatures in your room. Hope that helps.
