nesting?

Pumpkin is rearranging her viv. I fed her Monday and she usually hides for a few days to digest but she has been peaking out from behind her hide since she was fed. Sort of hiding but keeping an eye on things. So today I got her out for a little bit. She wasn't as active and kept trying to hide in my cloths. She seems to be a little thicker towards her rear area too. I felt around but couldnt feel any lumps or anything. She did poo on me and the thickness went down some but she still seems larger to me. Her poo was darker than usual and had a little slime in it. Not much but a little. I put her back in her viv so I could clean up and she went to her favorite hiding place. when I came back in the room, I kept hearing things scraping in her viv. I looked over and she was pushing her "tree" around and her other hides. She has made a pile of wood chips, like a big pile of leaves, between the hide and tree and was crawling into it. She had made sort of a tent. Could she be getting ready to lay eggs? She has never been with another snake and I have no intention of every breeding her. She has laid eggs this year about 5 months ago. I should mention that we have been having a lot of storms and my cat has been on edge. Could she just be making herself a secure place. I have seen snakes in the wild build nest areas in leaves so I was wondering if corn snakes do that. I really need to get a good book on corn snakes so I don't have to keep asking what is probably basic questions.

I've never heard of a corn nesting. My corns like to burrow and move around their substrate. I think they're just exploring. This kind of activity seems to go up after its been while since they've eaten. I can't exactly say it signals hunger because my corns would eat daily if given the chance, but it seems like after some digestion they like to go exploring.

I would call this perfectly annoying, and somewhat annoying (at least to me) because I like setting the tank up a certain way and they insist on rearranging furniture.

Thanks for the replies. I feel like I am constantly having to turn here for advice on her. My first pet snake ever and the first corn snake I have ever met. Every time something knew comes up I start worrying. She explores a lot but has never moved things or made hills out of her substrate. Guess she just wanted to redecorate. She must be really strong because I have the tree branch mounted on a large sandstone rock and she was moving that. It weighs at least 5 pounds.
She has stopped sleeping in her hides and has decided she would rather be behind her bowl hide or under her substrate.

How big are the hides?

They can fit into areas smaller than you might think. And half logs are sometimes not the best because they're open on 2 sides.

When I got my baby corn, he was 12"-15" long and curl up inside a hide that had a footprint the size of a credit card.

What I'm saying is that you might have hides, but if Pumpkin doesn't feel comfortable in them, he's going to look for something he does enjoy.

She has three different sizes of hides. A skull one that is on the small size, a homemade one that is soup bowl size (about 5" across), and a tupperware bowl that is about 7" across. She likes the tupperware bowl the best. I think she gave up on hiding in the hides because I kept picking them up to find her. When I saw her out I would reach in the pick her up and she would go to one of her hides. I would pick the hide up and get her out. I think she decided they weren't safe so she started going behind the hides. She has some ledges that she comes out and lays on at night. She is in blue right now. Maybe that is why she was trying to make herself some place that she felt was safe. I thought if I handled her more she would get used to me but I think I just stressed her. She doesn't rattle her tail at me now but she still runs from me when I reach in to get her, even on feeding day. My nephew finally came to see her last weekend. She was his snake originally. She came right to him and rubbed herself all over him. She even climbed into his hair and laid her head up against his cheek and looked at him like he was the best thing in the world. Never knew snakes could get attached to a person.

If the snake is blue from being in shed, I would not handle it.

You might already know this, but snakes like to feel super secure. The tigher and more cramped the space, the happier they seem. Dark is a good thing too esp. for crepuscular or noctural species like corn snakes. Fake plant from Michaels can help give hiding spots.

I have pictures of her viv on my profile page. She was in a 10 gallon aquarium so I built her a 4 ft x 14 inch wide x 16 inch high viv. She seems to like it. I have often found her stretched out across the front of it. She is usually very active and climbs and moves around a lot except when she is shedding or digesting. Should I add more hides? I think I am going to add more fake plants to give her more places to feel hidden. I am planning on getting another snake this spring. Maybe a Coral Ghost. I keep finding different morphs that I like but I don't plan on getting more than 1 or 2 more snakes. I just don't have the room for too many vivs. I think I really want a pink snake but the really pink ones are expensive. I love the ones at PoppyCorns but can't really justify spending that much on a snake. I also want an adult. Dealing with a hatchling just doesn't appeal to me. I have always liked snakes and have done my best to stop family from killing every one they find. I live in an area that has a lot of snakes. I am going to have to invest in a camera and start getting pictures to share. Sorry I got off topic.
