New snake arrives 5th Oct - set up and Qs.

So my friend is bring my little baby snake down on Saturday 5th October and I'm getting ready to have everything sorted by then.

I saw this set up kit and was wondering if that's a good one to get (everything that comes with is down in 'Product Description)? The bowl the snake is coming with will be smaller than medium sized and I can get a few hides, plants and things to make the set less open and scary (I may have been saving my empty toilet rolls ;P).

I'm planning on getting a thermostat, my friend said not to as "You dont know what set up you will have in the future so it's not worth it yet." and instead suggested an electrical timer - thoughts?

Ugh, it's so close... I may be getting a touch excited :D

You will still need a Under Tank Heater, thermostat, thermometer, and maybe screen clips. And may we see a picture of the enclosure? Or maybe you know its name? Don't want your little one getting out.

Here's a decent set-up as well,

Buy this http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-28010-10-Gallon-Critter-20-Inch/dp/B00176GBUE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380001952&sr=8-3&keywords=zilla+critter+cage << Great enclosures from what I hear. Very difficult for a hatchling to get out.

Next buy a Under Tank Heater appropriate for the size of viv. (For the zilla mentioned above it would be a 10 gallon UTH) Like this one http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiTherm%C2%AE-Under-Heater/dp/B0002AQCKA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380002068&sr=8-1&keywords=10+gallon+under+tank+heater

You need to get a thermostat: I personally love the VE-100, but the VE-200 is better http://www.reptilebasics.com/thermostats But you can get a cheaper one such as http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPRTC-Digital-Thermostat-Heat/dp/B000NZZG3S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380002219&sr=8-1&keywords=thermostat+reptile

Next you will need to get a thermometer with a probe: http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Digital-Terrarium-Thermometer/dp/B000MD3MFA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1380002293&sr=8-2&keywords=thermometer+reptile If you plan on buying more snakes in the future I would suggest something like this: http://www.reptilebasics.com/412l-thermometer

And then one hide on the hot end and one hide on the cool end. Water on cool end. And plenty of plants/decorations for cover.

Oops, just checked - I really should make my links more obvious than just basic 'set up kit' w/out the underlining etc (can I use 1st cup of tea as my defence?) Link is now below. I'm definitely looking around for decent locks/chains houdini couldn't escape items for the enclosure and am off down to the pet shop this Saturday as they have rather a large range of reptile goodies :)

I think that is actually a pretty good deal for what you get. It costs less than what you'd pay if you bought it all separately. Here is a checklist of what you need to get started, and your kit has all but the last two items:

Vivarium
Heat mat
Thermometer w/probe
Substrate
Hides (logs, plants)
Water Bowl
*Thermostat
*Feeder mice

The only thing you're missing is a thermostat, which costs almost as much as the rest of it put together, but it's very important to have.

THIS has good reviews, the company is well known with a good reputation, and the price is okay. You might check the pet shop to see what they have for thermostats, just be sure the quality is good.

You'll definitely want to find a way to make sure the lid stays on it though (with straps or something), if you decided to get the kit. The lid needs to be very secure and those types of enclosures don't have lids that latch well.

Thanks Amanda :) That Mat Stat is the one I've decided to get, I've just seen it at my local pet store so am off to check their price of it to compare to the other sites I've seen it on.

The feeder mice will be got - three pet shops within walking (read: non-thawing) distance of me and all have frozen rodents :) My freezer situation is a bit rubbish at the moment but I've been assured by two of the pet shops that they always have a certain amount of each in stock - but if one doesn't I can always check with t'other - so just in case I can make sure I can feed the snake :)

So I did a search for more kits and found THIS ONE that comes with THIS thermostat. Then I'd just need to get a thermometer with a probe which is cheaper than a thermostat on it's lonesome - seen some good reviews of that thermostat too :)

I'm so glad I found that one :D Now I just need to wait til payday, pay for it, wait for it to arrive then wait until friend with snake arrives...... ugh, too much waiting :(

AND then even once you get him, you have to let him adjust in his new home for 5 days without disturbing him. That is the hard part!!

Argh! That's going to be really difficult :S I shall channel my stealth-like skills into trying to spy from a distance ;)

There will be a number of them... you may get sick of them... I may just use my tumblr account for all the excess pics and post up the good ones here for you special lot :D
