New snake in hiding

I got my first corn snake last Friday.I gave him a kitchen roll tube as a hide on the Saturday night and ever since then he spends his full time in it. He has other hides but he doesn't use these. He didn't feed last Monday so I am going to try again this Sunday. He is 5 months old and I so not know when he last shed but he doesn't look dull and his eyes haven't gone blue. I was a bit worried about this behaviour and wondered if anyone knew why he would act like this? I do take him out of the viv and he is very interested in his surrounding then but once back in he slithers around for a while and then goes into this hide. He doesn't ever seem to bask either, could the temperature be a problem? I have a heat mat covering about 1/3 of the viv and this is set to just below 30oC

Welcome. :wavey:

His behavior seems perfectly normal to me. I'm glad he has lots of choices for hides. Most snakes have their favorites, but you still want to provide the others.

You might give him 3 to 4 days without handling before the next feeding attempt and then do not handle for 2 to 3 days after he eats. If he doesn't eat, there is info about on this forum about getting snakes to eat.

It is possible that he's going into shed but that it doesn't show. If that's the case you should be able to tell before the currently scheduled feeding.

Just below 30 C sounds good on the temp.

I can't see your picture. Maybe try setting you Facebook permissions so everyone can see it. I'm not sure but when I cut and pasted the link in a browser I didn't have permission to see it.

If he returns to the same spot over and over, then it's because either he feels safe there, or the temperature in that spot suits him better. All snakes like to hide, especially the babies. They also prefer a certain temperature range.

You really did not give much info in your post, such as:
What size tank (cage) is he in?
What is the temperature of the area where he is hiding?
What is the temperature at the other "Hiding Spots?"
When was the last time that he did actually eat?

You might also be interested to know that a snake's behavior changes before shedding. Their eyes don't just cloud over instantly. A lot of snakes will actually stop eating and start hiding 2 or 3 weeks before their eyes ever go blue. I've actually had snakes go a month without eating simply waiting on them to shed.

If I had to place my money on a bet here - I'd say either your snake is about to shed, or you have a temperature problem in the cage.

Good luck with it.
