So what is he? My inexperienced guess would be a Northern Water Snake?

Was thinking the same thing. The head doesn't look like a venomous snake, but the body does.

There not venomous, but they get up to about 4 feet and have a nasty disposition and do not like to play. They also are very smelly at times.
