Not getting a snake =/

I desided I am not going to get a snake. I don't think I would be able to provide the proper care that is needed. I will probably get a small animal like a hamster. Easy to take care of and A LOT cheaper. I already have a dawf hamster but I think its going to die soon because its normal life span is 1-1.5 years and I have had it for over 2 years. Dawf hamsters are a little too small so I may get a black bear hamster. Im not sure yet.

Although, I still want a snake lol.

srry to hear that but dont worry you've got your whole life ahead of you to decide of you want ot get a snake ;)

Sorry to hear you won't be getting a snake, but don't give up on your hampster yet. I just lost my last dwarf hampster he was 4 years old.

Joe, I think you made a very responsible decision. Owning a snake is a big responsibilty and does take a bit of money.

You sound like a smart young man, good luck with the black bear hamster. And don't worry if someday you decide to get a snake you have shown that you would be a caring owner.

That comment made me feel great :)

My decision was based on other pets I had that were a lot of work, such as iguanas. I had about 5 in my whole life and my 1st one died about 2 weeks after I got it because I didnt know how to take care of it properly. I was so sad . I do not want that to ever happen again so I think it's best if I wait a few years and read a lot about snakes. Maybe in a few years I will get one.

I will still post on this forum even though I am not getting a snake. I am very interested in snakes. Just looking at pictures of people's snakes is fun for me :).

I think you made a very wise and mature decision. However, you are still very young, and you have lots of years ahead of you to think about getting a snake in the future.

Don't let your experiences with your iguana put you off of corn snakes, though. Corns are much easier to take care of. Keep reading up on them. Keep researching, and keep coming to this site. If you do decide to get one a few years down the road, you will have had all this time to prepare, and your snake will be lucky to have you for its owner.

As it was already said but it is true. You have your whole life ahead of you.
I did not get my first corn until I was 31.

Just keep reading and learning as much as you can about snakes because one day you may get one. Please it never hurts to learn as much as you can about everything.

I actually think that snakes are easier to take care of than hampsters. No daily cleaning or feeding. However, I respect your decision and I commend you for it!

I, like Penman, was in my 30s before I got my 1st snake. Just had to much going on in my 20s and moved around a lot.

Iguanas are hard to raise. One of my favorite pet stores here in OK, Alligator Alley, run an Iquana rescue. They always have several in their display cage. They don't sell them but allow people to apply to adopt them. It is so easy to buy a little one for $24 and then it grows and grows... plus they need UV lighting or they are not able to absorb the vitamens that they need.

It is really neat that someone your age is making decisions based on what is best for the animal not what you want. I know people that are 2-3 times your age that haven't learned to do that yet.

Plus, hamsters are fun. I had one named Lynyrd Skynyrd, he was so funny. I would put him in his little plastic ball and he would follow me around in it. They are great fun!

Not trying to throw a wrench into things but:

I'd recommend a rat over a hamster any day. I've had both in my lifetime and rats are much much more social and freindly toward people. They actually like human interaction and a domestic rat will rarely bite. Mine were so tame I would let them roam my apartment and they would go back to their cage when they were tired. And they'll usually just hang out on your shoulder all day.

Plus they're easy to take care of. All they need to eat are lab blocks, but they'll munch on ANYTHING else you give them. They don't need to chew to keep their teeth from getting too long (although they will chew on anything anyway).

Thanks for all the comments! They made me feel better about my decision. :)

I wanted a rat before I got a hamster. My mom wouldn't let me because she thinks they are gross lol. Oh well, Im happy with the pets I have. I have 2 cats and one hamster. And today, I gave my hamster a very very very small pice of cheese as a treat. I love the way hamsters eat =). Anyway, Im going to go take a shower and then play with my hamster. :crazy02:
