okee x okee vs. okee x ultramel

My pair of okeetees are ready to breed. I'm sure they will produce some nice offspring. The female of the pair is possibly het for amel. I also have an '06ultramel male with nice borders that is at the lower end of being big enough to breed. I'm thinking about trying for ultramel okeetees to see if she is het for amel. Any thougts on the possible pairings?

The only problem I see is that you would end up with a BUNCH or normals het for either amel OR ultra regardless of if your Okeetee is het for albino or not. If that doesn't bother you, then there is no real problem with that cross. If you thinking getting "stuck" with a bunch of normals is something that would concern YOU, then don't do it. Either way, neither of your possible crosses are inherently wrong. :)

It is an interesting cross. I bred my MOST orange ultramel MALE to an SMR reverse Okeetee (basically a fluorescent orange) and an Abbott's PHASE het albino (similar cross to what you are proposing) with better black markings than most of the full-blooded Abbott's out there! Sooo, I certainly think it is a good cross. To try and go further, we plan to breed a female Ultramel (with almost a scale's row worth of black already) to one of Don's super "high white" reverse Okeetee's next year, too.

Sooo, I wouldn't be the one to talk you out of that cross - I think it's a good idea...if you have an outlet for the "normals" you produce. ;)

Getting rid of the normals wouldn't be a problem. I have contacts with a couple of local pet stores where I cold wholesale them. The male okee is from SMR, he has nice borders, but he's not an Abbott's. The female is Michelle at Creatures of the night and is a daughter of Gizmo (who came from Kathy Love), so she has nice bright oranges.

I'm going to have to test breed the female for amel at some point. I'm thinking it might as well be now.
