One Snake Several Questions

Hello everybody its been a really long time since I've been on the forums but I have a few questions. This week we added a new member to our family. I saw and add on a local site for an albino corn for sale for $20 and after some crafty convincing on my part my wife decided she could live with getting a second snake for me for my birthday (haha)."he" came with a "50" gallon tank which looks to me to be more along the lines of a 36 gallon tank as well as a "20" gallon tank which I'm positive is only a ten. As well as everything else we "needed" for him which included a uth, screen cover for both tanks, a water bow,l 1 hide, and a piece of grape vine. The previous owners wife had told us they just wanted to get read of the snake because since her husband had started working he was having a hard time finding enough time for the snake. and that he hadn't been fed in a month.... So as it turns out this was a bit more of a rescue than i originally thought. the uth they had for him was laying on the floor because it was no longer sticking to the bottom of the tank so he had no hot side at all. He's RAIL thin looks like it has been MUCH longer than a month since he was last fed. His water bowl was Filled with algae along with however many times he may have used it as a bathroom so bad that the water was actually thick As we were there to buy him i saw him take a drink and didn't realize until i had gotten home just how bad the bowl was. Once we got him home it was time for a top to bottom clean out of everything he had it took nearly 3 hours to clean everything up to my standards there was so much poop in his tank it was almost unbearable the poor guy was in a horrible state of neglect. I know i should have gotten him home into a clean viv and just left it at that let him get used to things but under the circumstances i decided to try and get him to eat he was very slow to take the mouse. My other corn Medusa will take from my hand and goes after it. however he seemed very timid and wouldn't take directly from me so i set the mouse in the feeding tub i have and after maybe 5 or so minutes of staring he finally took it wasn't aggressive with it just slowly moved towards it and starting eating. Once I finally got his tank cleaned sanitized and got him back in it the poor guy found his water submerged his head in his bowl and drank for a good 4 minutes straight. afterwords started flicking his tounge and started showing signs of coming back around. So I realize every snake is different and he was under a lot of stress with being moved and all but with the total lack of interest at first with eating should i be keeping an eye on that as time goes on or is it just normal for some snakes just to be a bit "lazier" about taking their food. Next in the two different attempts I've made to handle him when I pick him up he freaks out like its the end of the world. He doesn't try to bite so signs of aggression just tries with everything he's got to get away. I'm assuming this is a sign that he wasn't really handled by his previous owners is there any way and i know its going to take time but is there anything i can do to make things less stressful for him while getting him used to being handled. My other corn Medusa has always been so relaxed and so laid back about us handling her even when we had first gotten her as a baby never tried to escape when being held so this is just a new area for me and something i haven't come a crossed in the past so any help would be great. And if you've made it this far into my rant (thank you for reading) i need a little help with his I.D. he was only advertised as albino he has the albino red eyes but thats all the farther I've gotten with his I.D. Thank you again for reading and without further ado I'd like to introduce Lurch to the corn snake forums. :)

Kudos to you for rescuing this cutie. Looks like a butter (amel caramel) to me. Hopefully he'll calm down over the course of the next few weeks. He's probably still freaked out by the changes, so a little space could do some good. I'm sure he'll come around. :)

He's beautiful. So glad you saved him. He deserves a good home with heat, food and water.

As long as he settles a bit once you have him, I wouldn't worry that he initially tries to get away. However, I would give him 5 to 7 days without handling to settle in.

Does he have any checkers on his ventral side, even if they are very light, or not? Is he as yellow as he looks in the picture? With his red eyes and yellow coloring my first guess is butter.

You might want to take a look at pictures of adult yellow corns with red eyes on Ian's Vivarium.

Now that looks like a Butter! (Unlike the "butter" in the other thread) :)

Coincidently our butter "Butters" was Pam's (first grade teacher) show & tell reptile of the week today.

Congrats !!

Thank you everyone :) Yes I've been fighting the urge to play with him lol trying to give him him as much space as possible. His viv is set up in my office I'm not in there constantly maybe a few hours a day at most. But colors are very very close in the picture in person he's maybe just a little bit lighter but not much. His Belly is mostly stark white no real checkering that I've seen yet in the limited amount of time I had him out when he got here but I did see a few very light tan spots on his belly here and there.

Poor snake. I just don't understand what's up with some people. So, you have a pet that's "your husband's", and he doesn't have time so you don't even worry to change its water and clean a little bit? Come on! It's in your house, it's yours as well!

It's such a pretty snake, cheers on the rescue. It also looks butter to me. Give it some time to relax and assimilate it can rely on you and you'll end up with an amazing one!

I'm so glad you rescued him!! Love the name by the way!! He's not as thin as I would have thought but I guess I have no idea how old he is either!! He is beautiful though, I love Butters!! It makes me sick that people can treat any animal like that! He probably feels like the luckiest snake in the world right now since he was used to such horrible conditions! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW ADDITION I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A PIC OF MEDUSA

Absolutely love the snake playground your Okeetee Medusa is sitting in on in the picture. Looks like your rescue butter has a wonderful life ahead for sure!

Medusa is very pretty! That is a cool tree you have for her. Seems like your snakes are well-spoiled! Very cute, both of them :)

Thank you :) Yeah I like to try and spoil them as much as I can. I'm a bit or a nerd when it comes to pets I know corns don't need all that much room but Medusas viv is a 75 gallon tank that my wife and I put a lot of love into. I figure if I spent a large portion of my time in a single place I'd atleast want some room to move around and things to do in there :) So we made the branch when we bumped Medusa up to the 75 the main branch is just a 2" dowel rid cut to about 3 feet long and then I drilled holes in it to fit smaller and smaller sized dowels to make the other branches held them all together with a little wood glue then tore apart one of the fake vines (I think zoo med or fukers makes them) and drilled holes for the stems of the leaves and hot glued those in.... Finally stained the whole thing with coffee grounds and vinegar and let it air out. It took a few weeks to get all the smell to air out before we could put it in her viv but very worth it in the end. I hope to get a bit of extra money together soon and get another 75 and do it all over again for Lurch. And stack the Vivs on a rack (still working out my stand legistics on how I want to do that) but yeah he will be spoiled as well hopefully sooner rather than later Lurch is already by my guesstimates about 40ish inches long. So I definitely want him in a bigger viv soon. Also including a picture of Medusas viv. :)

Thank you :) Pretty easy project was just very time consuming construction time was about a day (could be faster but I move slow lol) and a couple hours of a few different applications of the coffee stain (optional)

Corns will never bite, even if they are being attacked, so there only defense is to run. Almost all corn are very skittish when they're young. I would recommend just putting your hand in the tank and staying still a few times in hopes of getting her used to your scent, but then just going for it and picking her up. She'll learn that you aren't a threat.

Corns will never bite

That's not entirely accurate...

We'd get the occasional babies at RbM that thought they were little cobras. One in particular was far more interested in biting me as many times as possible instead of taking the pinky I was holding.
