Pasco Florida = First Snake

Hi my name is Mark, Born and raised in Utah, until last Feb. moved to Florida. Had horses and explored the high Uinta Mountain back trails on horseback. Now with no horses to take care of, we got a snake to take care of...sort of, this snake found us...one morning as my wife opened the garage door, she came face to face with a snake, as you can expect, she almost lost it. But then he had such bright colors in the sunlight that I put him in a bucket until I could identify him, and found so much information on the internet about how great a pet that a corn snake makes,...so here we are, a new snake family.
Love all the information that is available about them and how to care for them etc. etc. Had him about three weeks now and he has shed once and ate two mice and a lizard, ... so I think he is doing fine in his new home.

Now we can watch TV and the Snake at the same time...not as much fun as riding mountain trails, but, hey,...what the heck?

Wow, i like your set-up and that's a beautiful WC, very nice colors and i'm definitely jealous :D

Oh wow that's an amazing snake! Could it really be a wild one? Or maybe an escaped pet? I guess it could be either or, since it is a normal and corns are native to Florida. I loooove that enclosure too! It looks really great.

Try to get him/her on just mice, no need for lizards anymore. Mice will be nutritious enough for the rest of their life. Also try to convert him/her to frozen/thawed or freshly killed. Much safer for the snake and more humane for the mouse. Though it might be pretty difficult considering it is wild caught. There are lots of threads about converting to prekilled foods though, I would give them a read!

Welcome, Mark. That is one gorgeous corn snake. Almost makes me want to start up with a "locality" wild caught corn.

I remember, many years ago, visiting my mother who lived near Zephyrhills at the time, I think (because I remember the name), and finding a corn snake in an urban field. I was really excited, because I'm one of those lame snake lovers that's been picking up snakes all my life, and because I knew what a corn snake was. It was a gorgeous animal, in my opinion. I wish I had photos, but it was before photography or the internet.

Florida sure is different from Utah and the mountains. Makes me wonder what caused the move. I'm in southern AZ, where I've been for the last 31 months. I used to live in northern MI until my wife talked me into retiring in AZ. But I'm really starting to like it here in the desert. I took a trip to Utah last spring, met some friends, did some herping, and had a blast. Beautiful country up there.

Hope you have a good experience with your new corn snake. You seem to be catching on quickly. If you need any help, let us know....

It is amazing how the local variants can be so different. Your corn is very excellent.

I had a good friend that lived in Sarasota, but moved to Gainesville before I started keeping snakes. I've seen a few wild ones in Gainesville. I keep the Miami corns and a few rosy rats myself. I also think the Okeetees are really nice. I've seen a few of those in the wild too.
