PayPal Fraud

I got a fraudulant e-mail today. Strangely enough it came as a fraud notice from PayPal. It said someone had tried to access my PayPal account from a foreign country and I needed to verify my account at a linked site. This was a slick looking e-mail, it even had an ad for a PayPal visa card on it. At the site I was asked to fill in fields for my credit card account numbers and my social security number, also my PayPal password. The first thing I noticed was that it wasn't a secure site. The next was all the information they wanted. No one is getting my social number. I forwarded the e-mail to [email protected] PayPals fraud addy and sure enough it was someone phishing for my identity. Be on the alert!

Got one too, today, and if you follow the links, the pages that ask for your info look just like PayPals...The web address gives it away, but it is sure to get someone, it's pretty slick, for sure...Folks, if you have PayPal, make sure to check the "Whats New" links when you are logged in...It gives tips on how to stay safe...

I got that e-mail about a month ago, too. Funny thing is ... I have never used PayPal and don't have an account!

I get about 6-10 of those a month! From fake Ebay mostly. I even got one from a bank that I do not have an account with. I guess they think we're all pretty stupid :grin01:

tip #1

Even if it seems a legitimate email, never use the link in an email to access sites with your personal account information. Just open your browser and type in the address.

If you're dumb enough to click the link and go through with it, you deserve to be frauded.

Paypal doesn't send emails like that.

I always just delete them anyways. or click "JUNK" If I want to do anything with paypal or ebay, I innitiate the contact.

Here's one I got recently, I thought it was pretty funny/ironic. I did forward it to paypal and it is a scam.

Here's another hint to spot these things out. True emails form paypal ALWAYS address you with your FIRST and LAST name, unlike the one below...

Dear valued PayPal® member,

Due to recent fraudulent transactions, we have issued the following security requirements.

It has come to our attion that 95% of all fraudulent transactions are caused by members using stolen credit cards to purchase or sell non existant items. Thus we require our members to add a Debit/Check card to their billing records as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. Your Debit/Check card will only be used to identify you. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records you will not run into any future problems with the PayPal® service. However, failure to confirm your records will result in your account suspension.

Once you have updated your account records your pending PayPal® account transactions will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

To update your billing records please login to your account by clicking here.

Thank you for your time,
PayPal® Billing Department.

I got one today too

It was different, though. Here is what it said:

You have added (***********) as a new email address for your PayPal account.

If you did not authorize this change or if you need assistance with your account, please contact PayPal customer service at:
(a paypal-looking link was entered here)

Thank you for using PayPal!

I went on-line later and checked my account and no new address had been added, but I contacted PayPal anyway (not through the above message, though). Because of getting the fraudulent message, I decided to change my associated address and my password, though. Hopefully I will hear back from PayPal soon!

Heh, yeah, I never use links in emails with any "account" type place. Type "paypal.com" into the address bar to get to your paypal account. :)

I've been getting emails telling me I received a credit card payment from ***** but cannot accept it until I upgrade my account to a premier account. What is odd about it is that I have gotten these at the same time that I did get a credit card payment, and the name they used in the email matches the name of the person making the payment. Then when I log onto paypal, it shows me as having a premier account and having accepted the payment already. :shrugs:

I got mine yesterday. lmao! I'm the same way, very seldom linking out of emails. I think that's one of the reasons I receive less than 5 spam emails a week;)
