Pipping Question

We're curious if there is an occasion where the snakes would manually need help out of their eggs. One of our snakes that pipped on friday still hasn't come out of his egg, his head is completely out and he's been sitting like that since friday and hasn't moved as far as we can tell. Thanks for your thoughts.

They can take a full day to come out, I had one go two days and was fine. Is it's head stuck in the slit that it made? You might want to gently snip a larger opening for it. I had to do that for a retard that got its head completely stuck and couldn't do anything. LOL I hope everything comes out ok.

Thanks, he finally came out but our next question is this...our first snake pipped on early friday morning and we were told that all the snakes should pip within 5 days of that one...as of right now we have four that haven't pipped yet, tuesday will be the 5th day. Should we "self pip" if they haven't pipped themselves by wednesday?

I have only one clutch but it has been more than five days from first to last pip! In my opinion you stand to lose nothing by waiting to see if they pip on their own. If they do not pip and die in the egg then in all likelihood there was something wrong with the snake. If you do cut the egg and the snake was not ready to come out then you could harm it. If you wait it might come out on its own and be fine! I rather let nature takes its course than possibly cause a problem.

Just my opinion. Good luck,
Jo

I agree. I have a clutch of 18 corn eggs this year. The first one pipped on June 26th (day 60); it's now July 3rd and all but one have hatched - the last one pipped this morning. That's 8 days from beginning to end of hatching, and since most of mine have pipped for 24-48 hours before hatching, it could be 9 or even 10 days from start to finish of the hatching process. I think I have a temperature difference across my incubator as the same thing happened last year. I would leave well alone for a few more days. Although the books say all the eggs should hatch at roughly the same time, I must say in my very limited experience of two corn clutches, this has not been the case. Just to add, all my hatchlings seem healthy and were last year too - just waiting for number 18!

Thanks for the info...I'm down to two unhatched eggs as of now...we have a total of 29 healthy looking babies...16 anery's het for pastel stripe ghost and 13 amel het for butter and diffuse and two normals het for butter and diffuse. It's so cute watching some of the really angry babies :)
